I do spank my kids as a last resort to get an important point across. I think a paddle three times on the clothed bottom is acceptable. Personally I don't think kids under the age of 2 really benefit from being spanked as I have read The strong willed child by Dobson. He talks a lot about difficultly with children and how to deal with it. I recommend it for anyone who wants to know where the fine line is between abuse and discipline. It helped me look at things a lot different then I otherwise would have. Hope that helps...

I don't believe in striking any one, much less a child. I have 4 children and they're never been struck, not even once. There are other punishments that work much better than pain.

My husband and I were just talking about this. Spanking is not abuse when used reasonably and sparingly. When I was spanked as a kid, I knew that what I did was something I never wanted to do again.
The same goes for my husband, who was only spanked once in childhood (because he rode his tricycle to the candy shop 4 blocks away from home). After that, it was used as a warning and he knew he didn't want to keep doing what he was doing.

Depends on the child and the situation. I smacked one of the kids on the hand because he felt it was okay to keep grabbing things off the shelf in the shopping cart after I gave him three warnings. Not like I beat his hand by any means, message got across loud and clear.

Respect is better than fear. If you hit your children, they will hold it against you forever.
Also, it is easy to go over the limmit when punishing your children. Sometimes it can be considered abuse.

No, I believe its more important to teach kids to respect their parents vs fear them.

Yes and I used my hand. It didn't work at first but after he got why I would do it (standing in the bath, holding scissors) He defiantly stopped.

the best way is with your hand i dont believe in whiping with anything but my hand that way i know how hard i spanked them. good luck and yes it worked very well
