How far is "too far"?

The problem is that beachfront property is so expensive in LA, there aren't any places to camp anymore on the beach.

The two closest tent camping beaches are Leo Carillo State Park in Malibu (technically, not ON the beach, but across PCH from the beach), and Doheney State Beach in dana Point (where you can get a site right by the sand). You can reserve them online at www.reserveamerica.com

Dockweiler (County beach) and Sunset Beach have RV camping, but that's only in self-contained RV's. No tent camping is allowed.

Newport Dunes in Newport Beach has tent sites, but for the $89, you might as well stay in a cheap hotel.

Further north, you have McGrath State Beach in Ventura, Carpinteria State Beach in Carpinteria (88 miles from LA), El Capitan and Refugio State Beach (110 miles from LA). Further south, you have San Celemte State Beach (80 miles), San Onofre, South Carlsbad, and San Elijo.

Good luck
