great point. Well taken. I noticed that we try to focus on the negative. I tired an experiment. Someone challenged me to tune in to what is going through my mind at least 5 times a day and classify them as poisitive or negative. Turns out most of it was negative and mind you, I am known by most people as always smiling and very positive. So that goes to show you.
I love positive thinking (even though i don't practice it as much as i would like to). thank you for pointing out something i forget and take for granted. The diversity and intelligence of the questions on yahoo and the way it opens my mind to many things i may never have thought of otherwise
Gable: the real world doesn't men ignore the many positives and point out the few negatives. You just made his point for him by pointing out that people tend to view reality as synonymous with negativity. Not true

In our "real" lives outside of this wonderful little community online, we deal with stupidity and meanness regularly. If we said something all the time in the "real" world about other people's meanness, life would prove rather stressful.
For instance, yesterday was a really crappy day for me. Amongst other things, someone parked so close to my car that I had to get in through the passenger's side. I blew a gasket, but I had no one to blow a gasket at because the jerk wasn't around.
So, sometimes, I come here because I want answers from the jerks. I want to know what possess people to be so cruel or thoughtless. I want someone to be held responsible for the incredible amount of a**holery that I experience on a daily basis.
Do I find answers here? No. But at least I have the chance to ask a good sampling of the world. And that's all I want is that chance.
Hope that made sense.
By the way, the short version of my answer is: we need the negative to value the positive.

I've noticed the same and also that those who complain about R&S meaness are invariably women. I've also noticed, in real life, that women generally place a great deal of importance on being nice, particularly if they are competing with each other for popularity. In a traditionally male workplace, say a machine shop, there's always a spirited on-going background banter that stops cold the instant a woman enters the shop. Men usually tone it down when there are women present. I suspect that the men in R&S are verbally jousting as they usually do with each other, when no women are physically present. Perhaps the women here are getting their first real glimpse of how men behave amongst themselves and don't appreciate that what they see is perfectly normal male behavior. In the real world, men compete and women cooperate. Here, everyone competes.
Anyway, what I've said here is only a hypothesis. ...actually more of a guess. If you doubt my observation, read the answers to this question with an eye to which sex is saying what. (Please, Ladies, Please. This is only an observation, not a complaint.)

ME! I'm fed up with being fed up.
Let's face it.. in this section, we deal with one of the hottest and most debated subjects on the planet- Religion/Spirituality. We have to have a little fun and a bit of trolling to lighten up the tensions here.
If people would STOP taking this so seriously, we'd all be a lot better off.

There isn't some fairness balance we have to maintain here. Seriously.

I get surprised that people will ask disrespectful questions and then complain about how many disrespectful answers they got.
Snarky in, snarky out.

yesh it is.
i think it's low self-esteem. they feel bad, they see a post that confirms this, and they jump on it.
then again, honestly, most of these types of questions are from christians claiming atheists are mean. i guess they're more sensitive.

I know. People ask, "Why can't we all just accept that it's a good idea to hate (group X)?"
THEN, the next question is, "Hey, why is everyone so mean?"
