DON'T QUIT COLD TURKEY IF YOU ARE PREGNANT!!!!
You cause an ASTONISHING amount of stress on YOUR BODY which of course HARSHLY affects your child!!
You will go through withdrawals and your CHILD will FEEL the symptoms ALSO!!!
Quit SLOWLY PLEASE!!
Many of these people are idiots and have a vendetta against smoking as if it were the Devil himself, please for the sake of your unborn child quit slowly!
If you don't stop smoking and your child has no birth defects and is born normal your child will "kick" the nicotine addiction within 1 week of being born which is MUCH safer than within your womb!!!

I never did manage to quit completely while I was pregnant, but have managed to quit since. When I was pregnant, I cut way down, to about two cigarettes per day. I did the best that I could and only lit up when I just couldn't take it anymore. Then I would only take a drag or two, put it out, and save the rest for later. When I finally did manage to quit, I tapered down & when they were gone, that was it. I tried to keep busy and avoid things that I associated with smoking (such as going outside, drinking, etc...) until I fealt that I was capable of doing those things without smoking. Just remember that the less you smoke, the better, and even if you have a moment of weakness and smoke, it doesn't mean that you have to start smoking again. Take one day at a time and do your best. Good luck, I know that you can do it if you put your mind to it!

Pick a set day. Throw out all lighters, matches, ashtrays, etc. Lollipops to keep your mouth busy. Stay hydrated. When you feel a craving coming on go for a walk (studies have shown it helps). Change your routine. If you normally smoke after meals, brush your teeth after meals instead.
If you have an ultrasound picture or small baby item you can keep where you have a visual reminder of why you are doing this. Have a support system. Tell everyone you know you are quitting.
Remember that you are doing the best thing for the baby and you. Way to go.
Also if you are having a hard time-talk to your ob. You aren't the first woman to go through this. They will be able to help you quit in the safest way for your baby. Trying to quit c.t. is no good if it doesn't work.

Yeah, here is a tip. Think about the unborn baby in your womb, and all the POISON your forcing upon it. You can quit cold turkey. DO NOT use NRT. (Nicotine replacement therapy) It will effect the baby.
They say the hardest is the first 3 days. You can do it. Everytime you want a cigarette rub your belly and think about your baby. It's doesn't deserve to be forced into your addiction. Keep a positive mind, get a support buddy to help you through it, and you will do fine.

Think you could be "addicted to shopping" as much as cigarettes?
A friend of mine quit cold turkey by calculating how much she spent on cigarettes, then spending it on new furniture. Cigarettes were no longer in the budget. That was all she needed.
Perhaps you can take the money you'd otherwise spend on cigarettes and spend it on the baby, new maternity clothes, maybe some new furniture for yourself too.
It also wouldn't hurt to get exercising. Walking is great, and they say exercise helps curb your cravings. (See link for recent news article.)
Good luck, and congrats on the wee one.

Chew lots and lots of gum. Peanuts or sunflower seeds help. It's definitely mentally hard to kick the habit, but the physical withdrawals are minimal. It is SO important to not smoke while you are pregnant. I quit cold turkey as well and am still amazed at how easy it was. You can do it! Good luck!

GUM! Gum is pretty much the life elixir when trying to quit smoking. Not bubble gum, but gum like Eclipse, with the hard outer coating. It gives you something to concentrate on, so you forget about cigarettes. Also, lots of Iced Tea, and coffee. but as with any addiction, it will NOT be easy. So you need a lot of will. Good luck, and hope i helped. congratulations on your pregnancy!! I wish you the best of luck!

I'm not going to lie it's hard, but if I can do it, so can you.
Some things that helped me...
Chewing on celery or carrotts instead of smoking
Not being around other people who smoked
Things that don't help...
smoking on tv
smokers
cutting out caffeine at the same time

Join a quit smoking support group and chew lots of gum. You also might try carrying something with you like a pen to hold in your fingers.
You can do it. Good Luck!
