Yes, an enlisted sailor can become an officer if they have a degree. Good on you for getting a degree on your spare time. Not many sailors have done that!

Before you apply for OCS through your command, consider what you want to do as an officer. Do you want to go intel, medical, supply, SWO, aviation, subs, etc. Once you make your decision, you will have a better idea of where your training will take you.

There are many programs in the Navy for this type of thing. There are commissioning programs such as OCS, but your best bet is to talk to your career counselor assigned to your unit and ask him or her for options. Make sure you let your chain of command know so they can assist you with admin like writing a recommendation letter. Telling your CMC doesn't hurt either. Make sure all your quals are up to date, and if you don't have your enlisted specialty pin, I suggest you get one before leaving for the officer rank. Prior enlisted (Mustangs) are respected in the Navy, so get that pin! Good luck to you.

It is very difficult to become an officer while still in the Navy if you enlist first. If you are on a ship, it can be close to impossible even if your ship has college classes on board. (Those classes will almost certainly be the very basic classes like general math, English, History, etc.)You have to be very highly motivated, not have a social life, forget about video games or surfing the internet, and get used to a lot less sleep. It could take you as little as four years of night school, but *all* you will be doing for those four years will be eating, sleeping, working, and studying. Period.

Completing your degree is a REQUIREMENT to seeking a commission in the Navy... Others have mentioned numerous plans and programs. Consult with your Command Career Counselor for your options.

I finished my degree and knew that the wait to make CPO (E-7) for my rate was another 5 years... so I applied to the LDO Program and was accepted and commissioned as an Ensign (OE-1) and left the service as a Lieutenant Commander (OE-4) in 1999

The degree is not enough. You have to have a spotless record; request consideration for OCS ,and have a written recommendation from your commanding officer. It's possible but not easy.

You can, but it's not automatic. Talk with your education officer or the chaplain for possible programs that the military offers to assist you.

Yes, but it probably involves being selected for the Officer School. It isn't automatic, but it can be done.

a degree by and of itself doesn't necessarily mean you will go to OCS. you must apply and be accepted first. and not every one is accepted.
