Excellent question. Maybe they can convince themselves that judgment doesn't exist when Christ is staring them in the face.

What? I'm not sure I even understand your question but here goes: often times severe burns literally destroy the nerves that detect pain in the skin and muscle tissue, so you can receive a really bad burn and be incapable of feeling pain (yes, even if you tell yourself that you got burned). This actually happened to me once while I was melting a plastic coke bottle with a lighter. A hot piece of melted plastic dripped onto my hand and immediately killed the skin where it landed. It didn't hurt. I also don't think it would hurt even if I had told myself it should hurt. Because it didn't hurt. Because the nerve endings were melted away. I felt no pain until a few days later when the burn was healing. BTW, if your question was hinting at some spiritual/religious question, I totally missed it. Sorry.

I have a different spin on your question:
Let's say you receive a horrible burn. You lift your eyes to heaven and ask God to instantly heal your burn. In fact, why not try it as an experiment? Get a crowd together(I hope I'm invited!) and publicly demonstrate the existence of God by first burning yourself, and then asking God to heal it, instantly and in front of all of those witnesses. You know, sort of like the Bible story where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal and God sent down fire to consume Elijah's offering in full public view so that everyone knew he alone was God. After all, an experiment that is good enough for the bible is good enough for you to try, right?
I wonder what the chances are that God will heal you right away, once and for all proving his existence. Let me know when you have scheduled this experiment to take place...

Ok I don't classify myself as an atheists I just simply do not believe there is a god. basically your say that god has shown himself and proven that he was here? I've never seen this proof what proof do you have the bible? don't think so that could have been written by anyone! then what? Resurrection? There are so many tall tales out there people try to make you believe it's not funny. A burn however I would feel and see. We experience pain however I have never experienced god! I've only been TOLD that he exists. Don't ask stupid questions.

I don't understand what you are getting at. If I burned my hand the pain would be direct evidence of the fact I had hurt myself and "wishing it were not so" would make no difference. (Though in fact science has shown that pain can be reduced as much as 25 fold by distraction techniques, which is how shamen do their tricks - but I digress).
On the other hand, if god does not exist, "wishing that he did" (ie faith) would also make no difference. You are left with delusions without evidence, but no reality.
So if neither pain nor faith can spring god into existence, what can?

Well, that's a dumb question considering that if you receive a horrible burn most of your nerve endings will be burned off so you won't have any sensation. Not because it doesn't exist but because your nerves have been singed.

Of course it would hurt; reality is that which exists regardless of your belief in it.
I am an atheist because no religion can prove its deity(ies) exists. If the evidence of any god's existence were as strong as that of pain, there would be no need for faith.
No religion exists that does not rely on faith. If it did, it wouldn't be religion, it would be science!

With the right training, one can block pain with ones' mind. I had three children without any anesthesia using relaxation and breathing techniques that teach you how to control pain. Why ask this question of only atheists? I don't understand.

You can ask yourself the same stupid question. If a Christian told himself that pain does not exist, would he feel pain ?
It's questions like this, and many of the comments made by believers, that make me glad that I don't believe in fairy tales.

That makes no sense.
What is up with all of you Christians trying to get your answers from Athiests. You are a sorry lot.
Pain is real. Tangible. Something every single living being expereinces. How in the world did you think that would be something you could argue with? Just plain silly......

That's silly.
We have good objective evidence that pain DOES exist. We can explain how it happens, what it does to the body, how we deal with it. We know what kinds of life experience pain and what kinds probably don't. Why would I lie to myself?
