Sorry, but this one just gave me a chuckle. There's really no such thing, so you'll have to ask the teacher what he or she thinks is the capital of the world. With such assignments as the "Fasion" capital, or the "Financial" capital being debatable, I'm not sure how one could define a particular city as the capital of the world.
Perhaps the question is realated to the ancient world, or some prominent figure's estimation of the capital of the world? Otherwise, in modern terms, I would have to say New York City since it has the U.N.
Be sure to let us know what the answer turns out to be.
And Dan H above is on the right track, but slightly off. A capitol always applies to a building. So the capitol building is in the capital city (and requires a capital investment of funds to be renovated with a capital "R"!).
:)

I think the question must relate to a city being a certain type of "capital of the world".
For example, Chicago was once called the "hog butcher of the world" because so much sausage was made there.
Hong Kong claims to be the shopping capital of the world.
Miami claims to be the Cruise Ship capital of the world.
Tyler, Texas claims to be the Rose capital of the world.
London and New York each claim to be the financial capital of the world.
Piction, New Zealand claims to be the green shelled mussell capital of the world.
If your son's question is truly what city is the governmental capital; then there isn't one. If this relates to the UN or something, then it would be New York City.

Since there are so many different sections to our world there is no single answer.
During the time of the Romans, it was Rome. Rome continued to be the central inportant city because the Pope runs the Catholic Church from there.
For today's Jews and Christians, it would be Jerusalem. The Muslims also claim Jerusalem as an inportant city, but Mecca is their most important city.
It would seem that a narrower definition of the word world would be needed to correctly answer that question.
Sorry, but there are some questions that can not answered.

New York City is the only one I can think of that might be referred to as the "Capital of the World".

If the world had a capital, it would be Istanbul. It is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the globe, and is well located for a world capital. Plus, it is a beautiful city.
I have never been there, but I hope to go some day.

When you google this you get various references, mostly to a recent article about London proclaiming itself the "Capital city of the world" (I used your spelling.) The article goes on to say that New York City could claim the title as well. One reference was to New Delhi.
Good luck.

I'm positive that there is none. Capitols are of individual states or countries.
Capital, the word that you used, refers to money, assets, anything that can produce an income.
