The Union never asked for 27%. This is a figure accumulated by Royal Mail when we asked when Adam Crozier was going to deliver his promise if paying Postmen/Women £400 p/w. Also any of you tried delivering 8-9 16kg bags of mail per day? In the heat of the midday sun or the frozen morning of January? The reason you have posties that have no care is RM bosses thinking anyone can do the job and getting rid of experienced staff who worked during a time when Customer service was the number one thing along side delivering the mail. And now we are being told by these bosses that you should NOT talk to your customers as this is a waste of company time and is better spend finishing your delivery. And incidently Parcel Force are only affiliated to us and were not balloted and wont be walking!!

Well...I use post a lot and although I have a nice postman, most of the time the service, especially Parcelforce is beyond awful. They must have my name on a blacklist because how can I not complain when my insured parcel is left by the bins and yes, I was in all day so someone couldn't be bothered to knock. This wasn't one off, this happens 1 in every 3 parcels I get. But I digress...
So postal workers are unhappy about pay and an overhaul of the organisation. People who have worked somewhere for a long time are never overjoyed about restructure, but from the service I get, I would suggest that is EXACTLY what they need.
As for pay - it is neither low nor high for most posties or general staff. It's not the hardest job in the world, and the pay reflects that. Sure theres some chief exec who is getting a fat pay cheque - but he will have a huge share of the responsiblity too (not to mention how many years of work or study it might have taken him to get there). If things go wrong ultimately it's his head on the block. It won't take years to train up a postie (and I don't mean that disrespectfully). So no, I think they should get a grip and bring my mail on time for once. Now nurses - thats another story...

Personally I don't see how for the posties that royal mail can afford a 27% pay rise. Surely this would put them out of business within a few months. I think that the Union and Royal Mail should work together on listening to Customer needs and what the postal workers think. They just seem to be working at pissing each other off without a solution on being cost effective. Yes I'm sure that a pay rise would be benifical but should Royal Mail not be looking at how they can speed up their delivery and sorting times before more major businesses start paying other companies to deliver their mail. There are many arguments to why the strick should or should'nt go a head. Personally I think the little people in the business should be taken notice off more than what they are.

I think the postpeople have a valid claim - if we want a top quality postal service we're going to have to pay post men and women adequate pay

Yes you deserve more money and better terms and conditions. You have been shafted by Alan Leighton - it's been going on for years.
Mind you, when I see the attitudes of some of the postal workers I deal with (ooh I can't lift that bag, it's too heavy), I can see why he felt working practices had to change.

Last time I checked noone made anyone go to work in this country. If you don't like the pay you're offered, quit.
Strikes are a joke.
