I'm finally seeing a psychologist later this week. I'm relieved, but kind of nervous. I know my drug history will come up. I want to be honest, but I'm worried that even if I need it, I won't get be allowed proper medication (which I have no intention of abusing- i want to get better!) I haven't done drugs in a while, but let's just say I might of had a slight snorting problem a few months ago. I don't abuse any drugs anymore, but I am still scared of getting in legal trouble or sent to rehab.

So what will a psychologist/psychiatrist do if I am honest?

Worst case scenario, they will ask you to find another therapist. They won't report you to any authorities unless you show that you have destructive behavior toward yourself or someone else (Suicide or Homocide).
Be honest because it's easier to go through one meeting with a psych. and be told up front that they can't treat you instead of going to 3 or 4 meetings and then having them say that. It's just easier to be ahead of the game.

First of all, you can't get drugs from a psychologist. A psychiatrist is the one who has the legal capability of prescribing anything, and I would be completely honest about your past drug use. Do not be embarrassed or discreet about any of it, most professionals have heard pretty much everything under the sun. They are there to help you, and will best understand the pharmacological regimen that would best suit someone with your history. As physicians, they are also bound by confidentiality laws and cannot report you unless you are a threat to yourself or others.

You absolutely will not get in legal trouble telling your psych about your drug history.

And you absolutely MUST be honest with your psych in order for them to help you. I know this because I went to treatment for years--literally years--and did not reveal my own alcohol problem. I spent thousands of dollars but got no better.

Then I got sober and got COMPLETELY honest. I have been sober now for almost 9 years and have been dismissed from therapy because I am--this is according to my therapist--"emotionally stable and healthy". If this is the sort of result you are looking for too, I can only recommend that you lay all your cards on the table.

Both a psychologist and psychiatrist are bound by the ethics of their professions to protect client confidentiality. All of your communications with them are privileged and they are not bound to report your activities to law enforcement UNLESS you threaten to harm someone else. In that instance, most states have a requirement that privilege be breached in consideration of the health and safety of the other person. I urge you to be totally and completely honest with your therapist. That is the ONLY way s/he will be able to help you. Good luck.

Just be honest, so they can help you. If you are not currently breaking the law then there is nothing to worry about. And anyway there is protection of the information you tell a therapist unless you might be a danger to someone else.

Good luck

they will guide you and give you counseling best to be honest because they can not give you the correct treatment if you are not, then in some cases they do blood testing anyway and it would show, so be honest all the way.
