You should have gotten power of attorney before your boyfriend left. He might be able to go to a legal office and get that information and fax/mail it to you. Since you are his girlfriend, I am guessing you don't have access to the base so you might have to call the DEERS office for them to sponsor you. Here is the number for DEERS. 1-800-538-9552. The hours of operation are 0600 - 1530 (Pacific Time) Monday - Friday (excluding federal holidays).

you can use this link to find an office near you.

My brother-in-law had the same kind of issue. His fiance got pregnant while he was home on leave. They didn't know thill he was back in Iraq and they were actually able to get married by proxy, since he was over there. It can be done, and might be the easiest way to go about doing it since you're planning on getting married anyway. If not, it does seem like he can get stuff done while he's deployed... though it might take longer. Try calling the base/post near you and just ask for Family services, tell someone your situation and ask how to get her enrolled. (just a tip though, not everyone you'll talk to will know what they're talking about... you might get the run around some, just expect it... it happens to everyone). Hopefully that'll help.

I believe he is the only one that can enroll her into deers, but he should of had that done as soon as she was born (unless she was born while he is away) but as someone else mentioned before, he can still take care of matters while deployed. I blieve it's his S1 that can handle it. I am sure he is busy over there so possibly you can contact someone at his homestation and ask what exactly you can do to get her enrolled. Or at least what you can do to help your boyfriend to get the daughter enrolled.

As for as I know, your daughter can only be enrolled in DEERS if she is on his papers, and he is the only one with the authorization to do that. Also - You need an ID card to be seen on base, and since you obviously don't because you're not married to him and are a civilian, you cannot receive any benefits from TriCare and you need to be seen on the economy.

Yes, you will need an ID. I am an Army wife and I live on base and I have to use my ID for everything, including getting on the base when I am off of it. You and your boyfriend should have went over all that before he left, it would have made things easier for you and your daughter.

just read the question that the previous woman sent. You said in that question that he was your husband now you are saying he is your boyfriend!!! i think in order for you not to get blasted on yahoo answers that you state the facts and don't lie!!!! Its not good chasing a dream i am sure you are a smart honest woman and you may of had a baby by him but he ran from his responabliites of being a father which stinks!! move on and be as sucessful as you can be sorry to sound harsh here but don't chase military guys for the benefits i think its wrong!! do it for the person he is!! i never knew my ex was in the army until a month of talking never asked what he did lol. I'm sure you will come out of this a stronger woman!! ok just read your comments i am not saying you are going after him for benefits far from it!! yes your daughter deserves the best care in regards to not needing a ID card i was a girlfriend to a US army guy and i could never go on base without him signing me in!! so i take it you have someone to sign you in on post. i hope that he does get in touch with you and yes you can get married by poxy but you have to ask if the military will accept this form of marriage!! i hope everything works out for you

The thing is since you are not married you will not get any benefits at all and you would need to get on base get her an I.d. card, you could try the V.A. or get in touch with his .C.O. The main issue though is that you would need to get on base, and in all honesty the military absolutely sucks when it comes to domestic matters. You may have to wait untill he gets back because they will want to know his info. and he would have to enroll her since hes the one in service. If all else fails try to go through the state and get medical through them, at least she'll be covered this way.

Unfortunately, he has to be the one to enroll her in DEERS and get her on his Page 2 before he gets her enrolled in TriCare. You really couldn't even do it if you had a POA, it has to be him. Plus, through TriCare, your daughter's doctor would be on base, and since you don't have a military ID you couldn't get there anyways. Sorry!

First of all things aren't that simple.

HE needs to take care of everything on his end. Since he was not there when the child was born, the Army may require a DNA test to prove paternity. Did you put him on the birth certificate as the father? If so things may be 1% easier for you. If not you WILL need the paternity test to get any coverage.

He is kind of blowing off his responsibilities if he hasn't taken care of all of this already. For him to do anything, you will need to mail him a copy of the certified birth certificate that has his name on it as father. HE will need to take that to his admin officer and add your child to his Page 2 as a dependant. After that is born he will need to complete a DEERS enrollment form that will put her into the Tricare system. He will also need a copy of the childs social security card and all other information like your full name, the childs address and your address. He will also need to get an ID Card application done because in order to receive medical care the child will need to be taken on base. The child will need an ID Card done because he in deployed and will not be able to take her himself. Normally children do not get ID cards until they are 10. You will need to jump through hoops too to get onto base because you are not and will not be the childs sponsor that is your boyfriend. The child also CANNOT sponsor you because the child is a baby and can not be help accountable for your actions.

Now if you didn't put your boyfriend down as the father on the birth certificate so you could receive aid like welfare and other things, you are probably not going to be getting any Tricare coverage until he gets home from deployment. He, you and the baby will all need to do a paternity test first to establish that he is really the father. Once it is determined that he is in fact the father than he will need to go do all the paperwork I mentioned above.

If you want your life to get easier, you need to get married. Until then your care for your child is going to suck because you will get hassled everytime you try to get onto base because you will never be allowed to have base stickers or a military ID for yourself. That child is going to need to go to the doctor nearly on a weekly basis for several months when it is young. You and the father need to figure out what you are going to do quickly ot you are going to need to get the baby on public assistance for its medical care.

Sorry the story isn't nicer. I have seen this situation a million times and it never gets easier. There are a million women out there that claim a military guy is the daddy and in reality he isn't. That is why the system is set up so the military does not get stuck paying the bills for everyone.

I hope things work out for you.

You can't enroll her in DEERS, he can. The first step is for him to acknowledge paternity and get the child listed in his service record as a dependent.
