Perhaps Judas lacked the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven? See the obvious parallel between Matthew 16:18-19 and Isaiah 22:20-22. Eliakim was a sort of prime minister under the king in the Davidic line, and was given the key to the house of David, and the ability to set rules, and was a father to the house of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Analogously, Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and was given the ability to set doctrine, and was a sort of father in the Church, as well as a sort of prime minister in the Church under the final and eternal King in the Davidic line.

Another difference might be found in Acts 1. In verse 15, the Greek text employs the verb which gives the impression that Peter was the leader of the disciples (he stood up in their midst in those days the way a king, prophet or leader rises up). And in that context, he proceeds to scripture foretold the fall of Judas.

Also, note that Peter (apparently) wrote two epistles which became part of the sacred canon, which would mean in certain contexts he was infallible. Was Judas gifted with such a power or inspiration?

In short, Peter was quite different from Judas. If you doubt that, others should doubt your claim of being a Christian.

Peter did not betray Jesus, he denied knowing him. But the main difference between Peter and Judas is that Peter repented with tears and Judas hung himself out of self-regret.

Well, for one thing Judas betrayal led to the death of Jesus. Peter was just trying to save his own skin. Although both were sins and according to the Bible, all sins are equal in the eyes of God. You could also argue that without Judas' betrayal, Jesus wouldn't have fulfilled the prophecies by dieing and rising again.

Peter had a clean heart and confessed his sins. Peter was a poor fisherman. Judas was wealthy and had money and power.

Peter was penitent and kept his faith in Christ even though he knew he did wrong. Judas was not penitent. He betrayed Christ for financial gain and hung himself. Judas was also treasurer and regularly stole from the treasury.

Peter didn't betray Jesus, he denied Him just as all of the apostles did. They all left His side when He was being taken, that's different than offering Him up to be crucified.

Judas was wicked to the bone. Peter just goofed up from time to time and eventually was redeemed.

Judas lacked loyalty. Peter had that loyalty to Jesus.

Peter betrayed Jesus, but he repented. Judas didn't. Satan had such a hold of him that he commited suicide rather than repenting.
