Has anyone succesfully claimed against their Home contents insurance for a Digital Camera? I have accidental damage & personal possessions insurance, but would like to know if anyone has succesfully claimed and what had happened to the camera?!

Thanks

Most Contents Insurance have an accidental damage section - and this often includes items up to some value outside the house.

Unfortunately, chances are you will have an 'excess' of at least £100 (i.e. £100 is deducted from each claim) ... not a problem if you have been flooded out and are claiming 1,000's worth of TV, DVD Sky Home Cinema equipment (plus carpets etc.) .. but if you are claiming for a £250 Digital Camera you will only get £150 .. and most Policies will include some sort of 'no claims' discount - so your premium might well go up by more than £100 in a year ..

The purpose of any insurance policy is to put you back in the position you were in before the loss - in your case, that position was owning a piece of jewellery, so you are entitled under the policy to a similar piece of jewellery, nothing else. The insurer is under no obligation to give you a cash settlement although some insurers will consider it if you are willing to take a lower settlement amount. It is always worth asking but they do have the right to refuse. If you are unhappy with the choice of jeweller the voucher is for you can ask them if they can make it for a different jeweller. Again, they do not have to accommodate you but many will.

Well, my deductible is higher than the value of my camera. I HAVE seen cameras successfully claimed - but they were in a fire, and included with the other items destroyed or damaged by the water (from the fire hoses).
