I have. When my dad nearly died, my mom freaked out, blaming god and then wondering if he even existed. In fact, in many deaths I've been through, many friends have questioned god deeply at that time.
If you're a student of history, you know that the traumatic experiences that soliders face have turned many into Atheists.
What are your experiences with this?

My brother came back from Desert Storm an atheist. He refuses to talk about what happened over there, and he refused to go to church...period...despite my mother's nagging. That was the first stint in Iraq, and he's still an atheist.

No atheists in foxholes, no Christians in porn-properties. i think of it fairly is a remarkable commerce. yet then i've got met an atheist conflict veteran, and he reported he replaced into nevertheless an atheist in the foxholes too. So in step with risk it will be there are no longer any agnostics in the foxholes. yet then we could be offending that team... yet lead them to commence their very own thread, actual?

This is a good question.
I watched my mom go through a time of doubting her belief in God in the first days after her breast cancer diagnosis. She went through quite a struggle with her faith, but today her faith is stronger than it was before.
A family friend of ours lost his daughter at the young age of 25 to breast cancer. He never doubted his faith for a second. . .and to this day I still do not understand how he did it. But, through her death he has actually encouraged others. . .it is amazing.
I can absolutely see that when you go through hard times you would cry out, "Where are you God". . .and I can see that some would decide that He in fact does not exist. But, I am so thankful that of the few times in my life that I have been through enough to cry out, "Where are you, God". . .that I heard His answer in my heart, "I am right here, I will never leave you nor will I forsake you, you are my child."

I'm a Christian myself, and I lost my father when I was 13. I was saved before then. Sure, I was angry at God that I didnt have my father with me anymore. But I didnt turn away from Him. If you will hang on to His promises of hope, The Lord will make your faith stronger in times of trouble. I've also been abused by an ex, and have gone through several other traumatic events in my life. But look at Job in the Bible. Job lost everything he had: his wealth, his health, even his family......but he never turned away from God. He stayed faithful. And in the end, God blessed Him with 10x more than what he had to begin with. Prime example of how true faith can be rewarded. You may not always see the reward on earth, it may be when you reach Heaven, but you will recieve it. God promises that our faith is not in vain. To answer the actual question, yes, I have seen people who claimed to be Christians turn into atheists. But it was a choice. You can choose to press on, or you can choose to give up.
I pray God's blessings upon you!

Yes, I actually think that that is a more likely happening. I know that having to deal with death is what ultimately made me question the existence of any gods and is what set me on the road to being an atheist.
I also know that my grandfather who fought in WW2 went off to war being a Christian and returned an atheist.

I've seen several atheists who have been in foxholes, but they were atheists before entering the foxhole from what I can tell.
Most atheists that I know became atheists because of really studying and thinking about religion. A couple actually went to a seminary and became atheists there.

I have seen that, but I tend to have more respect for atheists who reach the conclusion that there is no god after studying religion and sceince for years. Otherwise, it's kind of like saying "I have no God. You're dead to me," which may be, but it doesn't negate the existence of God... it just means you've decided to deny him out of spite.

My parents threw me out of the house when I was 16 years old. It was winter at the time. I had always questioned god (the reason I was thrown out of the house) but my time on the street really sank in the reality that there was no big sky pixie looking out for me.

Yes, there have been many. It also happened to many Jews during the holocaust in the way you already mentioned. Life is a confusing journey. Human beliefs are tested at every turn. Sometimes they are carried with us on the straight path and sometimes they fall to the wayside and crash to the ground.

It wasn't good or bad times that turned me from the Lord...it was research and knowledge. I studied religion and history, and then I made the sdecision that I could not believe in a God.
