Is it worth getting a custom birthday cake ($70) or a regular cake from the grocery store for my daughters 1st Birthday?

for a first birthday I'd say no it is not worth it. they will not remember it and they cannot even request what they want.

just order a cake from a grocery store, most will provide the babies cake for free also.

I would just get a regular cake from a grocery store. Some grocery store cakes are pretty good and can be "custom" decorated fairly cheaply. It depends on where you buy. Your 1 year old will not remember or care about her cake. You'll probably be lucky if she even eats any of it. If you do buy a custom cake, it would just be for your guests to enjoy. So, i guess it comes down to how much you want to impress your guests. Personally, I would not spend that much $ on a birthday cake for a child's party.

I am the kind of mom who loves it all perfect. Although she will never remember... you will. And you'll have pictures to show. My bf made my son his 1st birthday cake and it was so cute! She said it was pretty easy. I have nerve damage in my right arm so decorating would be a mess for me... But I share with you the cake. She made a train. You know those little mini bread loaf pans you can get anywhere for about a dollar? They are 4 inches long maybe. She made each piece of the train in one of these and icing each piece different. Candy for the wheels, tootsie roll on top of some of the pieces as logs, some pieces were hauling mini cookies (like rocks) The front piece (the engine) she sat a Bear in the Big Blue House candle on icing. It looked like Bear was driving the train. I washed up my sons one train track and we put it on the table and lined the train around the track. It was so cute! Everyone loved it, each train car was a piece of cake so there was no cutting. The Front piece was his 'smash' cake. It worked perfect. I know you have a little girl... But I had to share with you the idea. My bf has also done a plain cake, cut pieces in squares and icing each square like a building block... Stacked them like a child would stack building blocks and put a #1 on the very top. There is so much you can do at home easy (If you have a good arm ;) Have fun whatever you decide!

even though it would be great to have the best cake ever for your daughter's 1st birthday, just remember that she is turning ONE and will not remember it! you're basically doing it for the other mommies and the photos that you'll no doubt be taking. if you are very very busy, get a cake made. pre-order from any bakery or home industries store. if you have any ideas, such as the number "1", something with your kid's name on it, a doll or a kitten or whatever, you could even ask them to make something along the lines that you are thinking. if you do find the time, just bake square cakes to the simplest, easiest recipe you can find. its relatively easy to cut shapes and stick them together with icing sugar to create whatever shape cake you want in the end. use brightly coloured icing and decorate it with sweets and candies. just a tip - if you use coloured candy (smarties and some jelly sweets), wait until the last minute to put them on the cake, as some of these might bleed their colour into the surrounding icing. have fun and whatever you do - don't make too much work for yourself - enjoy your daughter's birthday with her!

I got a grocery store cake decorated with character that the party was done in. Turned our wonderful. I also got them to decorate a "mini" cake with the same theme for the baby to have all to herself and served the large one to the guests. I thought about getting a custome cake, but decided to wait to spend that kind of money until she could tell me what she wanted.

Get her a cupcake or small cake, but don't waste $70 JUST on her cake. If that cake is going to feel the masses, then it is different, but not just for her. Put that money towards her education or something she will really enjoy and remember.

If you have a Giant Eagle around you, you can order a somewhat custom cake 24-48 hours in advance and because it is her first birthday she gets her own cake for free! They call it a smash cake because it is just meant for her to have fun with.

You can easily have the best of both worlds.

Save some money by picking up a ready made cake at your favorite bakery, then customizing it yourself for your child's birthday theme using cake toppers and edible cake art images.

Your cake will look just like your favorite baker decorated your child's special birthday cake just for you.

And remember to take lots of pictures and shoot lots of video of your child's birthday party. First birthday parties are VERY important and years from now when your child is older, you can both enjoy looking at those precious pictures and video from your child's special first birthday.

Here's what you do, Rhea! Make the cake yourself. And let her eat THAT cake ALL by herself! It can be a small cake since only she would be eating it. You can get another cake from the store for everyone else. You can bake a second one for everyone else too, if you want. Just make sure that your daughter gets to eat a WHOLE cake ALL by herself! It will get you some WONDERFUL pictures that you can use to embarass her for the REST of her life!!! *grin*

I made my son a cut to shape cake, for his first birthday you could probably get a book at he library. it's custom and it's cheap. Honestly he had no Idea what was going on......so I wouldn't spend the $70 on a custom cake.
