Holly is a decorative vine that is normally used at Christmastime.

Holy refers to something that is used to bring a person closer to God (such as the Bible or water) or a person who has devoted his or her life to God.

We call the Pope a holy man because of his dedication to God and His people. Sadly, not all Popes have been holy.

*chuckle* holly or holy? (sorry, I know it's a typo, but I have some pretty funny images running through my head right now)

All popes had the title "Holy Father." I don't think that automatically makes them "holy men." To be holy is to love God (however one "names" God), act in ways that praise God, and make the world a better place. All people can be holy.

When talking about objects, to me, holy simply means that they have been blessed and have a specific function/purpose/use that is directed towards God.

We don't call the Pope a "holy man". We call the office of Pope a holy office because it was instituted by God Himself. Most of the individual men who have held that office have demonstrated a high degree of personal godliness, or holiness. But there have been some exceptions. The exceptions do not have any effect on the inate holiness of the office however.

Holly is the plant with the red berries.

The Pope, as Bishop of Rome, is simply the successor of Peter, who was the first Bishop of Rome and head of the earthly Church.

They are HOLY because of their apostolic succession .
