The sentence is faulty and clearly meant as an insult towards atheists. But I was wondering how theists feel about it.

"No atheists in foxholes" means that an atheist will turn to God in times of desperate needs. If I believed in God, and my belief system was brought down to nothing more than a "desperate act of desperate people" I would be highly insulted.

So, is "no atheist in foxholes" a bigger insult to atheism or to theism?

I've always wondered about that one myself. However, ineffective as it is I still see it as an insult. The implication seems to be that atheism is just some luxury we adopt simply due to the fact that we aren't in constant peril. As if atheism were some charade that comes crashing down when we're in a situation we can't control, like a baby clutching for mama. It's an insult to insinuate that atheism is just some arrogant self-important attitude like hubris. How dare we.

I think extreme religious people insult god more. Every dam religion has killed people over there beliefs. I don't need to make a list. If god does exist there is no way killing another person for that believe is correct. To correct a fact atheist doesn't say god doesn't exist, atheist is just the act of not believing. You say god exist I just choose not to believe that. There are extremes to everything, but at least atheist don't go killing people for there "belief".

It is an insult to the atheist I think. Apparently some fools believe that under stress anyone would suddenly pray to God. For one thing, God does not interfere here. For another, most have the inner strength to face life and all its hardships alone.

I agree, it should be more of an insult to theists than us. To me it is just an assumption that is more than likely untrue. I'm sure if I was in a foxhole, I'd be trusting in my AK47 and fellow soldiers, not some invisible sky pixie, to keep me alive.

You are stretching a bit here. The statement is meant to convey not that Christianity is only for the desparate souls, but that people are fooling themselves about not wanting there to be a God. I'm not sure how well it plays out, but it's not intended as an insult to anyone, and I don't personally use this sort of tactic.

Well it's certainly insulting to atheists as it's a slander that simply isn't at all true.

On the flip side, I also take it to mean "Theists are the ones who are fighting wars." Which sounds about right, as religion has been the primary cause of war for a very long time, and it is largely the cause of our current war.

Equal! :) I should get a career in politics ;)

You're saying to the Atheist, that the convictions they've lived by their whole lives will disappear once they are faced with death. But to Christians, you're saying that "desperate people are willing to try ANYthing, even your God."

Maybe it's an insult to foxes, who would rather not be in the holes in a war that humans started to begin with.

I've seen more than one atheist find some kinda spirituality when they are what we call "downrange". When the bullets started flyin I've also seen some theists lose all sense of standard, and sometimes faith.

I never thought of it being insulting to theists, but that's an extremely good point!

Well, at the very least it's probably degrading to theism.

Much like Pascal's Wager.
