Or did He not realize it until He was older? I have heard some people talk about this theory, but it doesn't make much sense to me.

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.”
Luke 2:52

From this verse, it seems that Jesus went through a normal growth and learning process. As a infant, his human nature didn't yet have language skills. In his human nature, Jesus did not always use His omniscience.

But Mary & Joseph were aware of his divinity, and would have been teaching Him. I like the dialog from the Nativity Story:

Joseph: An angel came to me. He told me the child within you had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and that I should not be afraid.
Mary: Are you afraid?
Joseph: Yes.
[laughing]
Joseph: Are you?
Mary: Yes. Do you ever wonder when we'll know?
Joseph: Know what?
Mary: When he is more than just a child. Will it be something he says? A look in his eyes?
Joseph: I wonder if I will even be able to teach him anything.

oooooo, this was a GREAT discussion in one of my grad school classes. Sucks that this is a Q&A format, but I'll share my opinion and hope that I'm not muddying the waters even more.

Jesus is/was/ever will be both 100% human (just like us) and 100% divine (God). On earth, he experienced everything from a human perspective - 5 senses, logic, emotions, etc. In a way, this limitted him in his understanding, but I think it was still there, just not in a way he could express. He *knew* that he had a special and unique connection to a relationship with God who he called "Father," but he probably couldn't quite comprend exactly what that mean in the universal scheme of things.

Have you ever "felt" a sound? A bass noise that reverberated so low that you can't hear it, you can't exactly feel it (nothing is shaking), but you just KNOW it is there? I think that it was that kind of "knowing yet not knowing" that Jesus experienced in regards to being the Son of God.

We know that by the time he was twelve he knew exactly who he was and what his mission was on the earth. He told Mary and Joseph, "wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" He was speaking of His Heavenly Father, not Joseph. Then from twelve until thirty, the record is blank, saying only that he grew in favor with God and man.

he knew it from birth cause his mother was a V-I-R-G-I-N and i wanna take this opportunity to say that when Jesus does return he's not gonna have any kind of miraculous birth this time cos then the Secret service wouldve prolly take him away and tottally fukkerd around with Gods' son... so the second coming of Christ won't actually know he's the Son of God until much much later in his life... like say about 20? imagine the surprise on his face though when he finds out about it....

Haha God is just like, "Ohh btw yur my son. Just thought I'd let you know" and Andrew would be like... WTF?!!?!? and God would be like "Yaa... i thought you'd say that, but don't be too surprised" then Andrew would be like, "You sure?" and God's like, "YEEEEEEEEE, positive."

From reading I would venture to believe he know before his conception. As he is the 2nd person of the trinity (which is a mystery). He was god but in human form...so how could he hide himself from himself. Even Elizabeth knew who he was when she says " how is it that the mother of my lord comes to me" My lord meaning her God. God in heaven. I think he had to perform as a human to fulfill the plan of salvation.

Little is known about Jesus early years. But, as young as twelve, He told Mary and Joseph, "I must be about my Father's business."

I have no idea what He understood as a baby but by the age of twelve He knew it. He said, "...I must be about my father's business."
