I see a lot of hispanics (catholic or not) wearing rosary beads??? I have not seen any other race wear them around the neck. When I used to go to church we were not allowed to wear them around the neck... (I am not hispanic). I am just wondering. I know that they are for prayers not for wearing am I correct?

The primary purpose of rosary beads is to be a tool for prayer, not a piece of jewelry. But I did some research on this and I couldn't find anything in the official documentation that says you CAN'T wear them. I know nuns used to wear large rosaries on their habits.

I personally don't wear mine, but I also don't have the same "attachment" to the Blessed Mother that is often found in Hispanic cultures. As long as they are being worn with respect, I'm not bothered by it.

Rosaries worn outside of religion
Rosaries or rosary-like necklaces are often worn for non-religious purposes as a fashion or jewelry item, and are sold in different variations in popular jewelry and clothing stores. Such ornamental use, especially the wearing of a rosary around the neck, was heavily popularized by singer Madonna in the early 1980s and has experienced a come-back in recent years.

Wearing of a Rosary that one actually uses to pray is neither uncommon nor sacrilegious in various Catholic-adherent cultures, and was a common practice in the Medieval and Renaissance periods, particularly among monastics (monks and nuns). Rosaries are also worn hanging from or looped over a belt, particularly with some religious habits, pinned to and hanging from a shoulder or neckline, or wrapped around a wrist or arm as a bracelet. Some other Christians feel that it is improper or even sacrilegious to wear a rosary around the neck.

A LONG time ago, in Catholic school, many of the boys wore Rosaries around their necks. The Nuns didnt say anything, UNLESS there was a girl wearing your Rosary at the same time as you.

No, you aren't. It's somewhat sacrilegious. I see a lot of people doing it too - but they should get a cross necklace, not a rosary to wear around their necks.

NON CATHOLICS DONT CARRY THE ROSARY BECAUSE ITS NOT OF THEIR FAITH. HISPANICS WEAR THE ROSARY BECAUSE MANY STRONGLY VENERATE THE VIRGIN OF FATIMA. OR THE VIRGIN MARY FOR THAT MATTER. AND SINCE THE VIRGIN MARY WAS SAID TO HAVE APPEARED TO A NATIVE AMERICAN IN MEXICO, SHE'S DEEPLY VENERATED. BUT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO BE WORN.

I was always told you NEVER wear them. But that was a long time ago, so I have no idea.
