ok ill do my little speach that i give to my patients when they have there braces put on
nothing hard, sticky, chewy,crunchy
no crusty bread, pizza crust, garlic bread crust, have the middle but not that out side
any apples hard fruit or raw veg needs to be cut up small still eat them but be careful
the only crisps are skips, wotsits and quavers
no walkers hula hoops doritos or pringles,
no sweets or lollys of any kind, no gum or hard choc bars the only sweet thing is buttons, flake, areo things that dont have any thing in the middle,
no fizzy drinks, sugary drinks, squash, fruit juice cos it will damage your teeth and you will end up with white scaring to the teeth so milk water tea or coffee
if you are going to eat a burger or toast then dont bite into it break it up with your fingers and pop it in that way
good luck xxx

From my own personal experience: Carrots, Skittles, Apples, PB & J (lame huh! but I think it was chunky peanut butter), and anything crunchy or crisp.
However, I really suggest you avoid breaking them...I snapped a couple wires, usually on friday nights (and of course the orthodontist wouldn't be in till monday) and ended up suffering because some wire somewhere in my mouth made it its personal vendetta to cause as much pain and agony as possible. (Oh and if your dad is like mine, don't let him anywhere near your mouth with his pliers!)
Oh, another suggestion with braces. Always have a bottle of ibuprofen or something on hand as well as some mouth numbing gel of some sorts, like ones that you can get for canker sores and what not. You'll be a much happier camper!

Why did people assume you want to break them? Maybe you are asking for food to avoid...
Avoid popcorn, gum, lollipops, taffy, Now-and-Laters, Starbursts, fruit snacks, corn on the cob, whole apples, raw baby carrots, hard candy, jerky and AIrheads as they can be too sticky or cause your wires to break!!!
Good luck ( =
