Yes it's OK. It won't affect your reception. Just don't make little coil loops in the leads -- run them straight through.

A couple of other notes:
1. When it says to make one end of the coil "earth ground" -- that means there really has to be a connection to some conductor that is actually grounded to earth (like the center screw on an electrical outlet, or a water pipe.

2. Since you are earth-grounding an antenna (especially if you run a long wire outside your house). DO NOT operate the crystal set when there is even the smallest chance of lightning in the area. Make sure the antenna is down, or completely disconnected from earth-ground.
