I have often wondered the reason for this. Perhaps they dont want to dazzle the banker. lol.

1: To help with the lighting and angle shots so no distraction.
2: To stop any distraction for the contestants in East and West wing not to mention the one playing.
3:To keep us the veiwer fully hooked on the game and not watching anything else.

They do it in the weekest link and also Millionaire to stop ditractions occcuring.

If you ever watch who wants to be a millionaire you'll notice that the audience behind the presenter and contestant are also wearing dark clothes. It is so the viewers eyes are not distracted. The audience then literally do blend into the background.

Because its not a party to dress flashy...also, they don't want the audience to highlight the show, the contestant is supposed to, and it gets the focus on the drama of what case to open next....

I didnt hear that they had to, but maybe its like the Weakest Link, they were required to wear black or dark colors in the audience..

It is so that the viewers don't look at all of the bright colors and clothing that people might were. It is also to help stay focused on the people playing the game.

We were only discussing this last week. No conclusion but have you ever noticed that there is always one idiot in bright red or something, probably just to prove what a rebel they are.

simply to build up drama. black suits and alike is also used to make people look sophisticated.
