At the salon where i work we dont perm anyones hair under the age of ten. As far as it hurting her that you will not have to worry about. The type of the perm generally depends on the length of the hair. If she has long hair i suggest spiral. Also the bigger the rods doesnt always mean better. Longer hair can be harder to perm some times and the curl will also relax faster. So if she has longer hair i would suggest using a smaller rod. I would say purple rods. Or try a combination of purple and peach. It will give it a more natural look, and it wont relax quite as fast because the rods are smaller. Also just because the rod is smaller doesnt mean that it is going to be a tight curl. It all depends on the lenghth and density of the hair.
As far as what she should do to prepare it .... there is really nothing perticular. just dont highlight/ lift color within 2 weeks prior to the service. it will weaken the hair and could cause breakage. The stylist that will be perming her hair will do a test and decide which perm solution would be best for her hair. There are many different types of perms for different types of hair.

Hi. I dont think your daughter should get a perm even though she's 13. Why does she want the perm? Could she manage her hair now? Even if she does get the perm, that wont manage her hair better. She would have to take more care with it since her hair will be weaker from the chemical process. Perms break down the natural hair shaft.
First, you should get natural based/less chems/100% natural products that work for her curly/wavy hair. My personal experience was that I had thick curly kinky hair and I permed it in hopes of making things better, resulting in my hair damaged and breaking off. So one day, I decided to go back natural. I have never went back. These are websites I found for anyone with curly/wavy/coily/kinky hair, any race.
www.curls.biz
www.honeyfig.com
www.janecartersolution.com
www.longlovelylocks.com
www.curlicious.com
www.johnmasters.com
www.blendedbeauty.com
www.jessicurl.com
www.sistasplace.com
www.urbanbella.net
www.kinky-curly.com
www.devacurl.com
www.gnc.com and www.vitaminshoppe.com - good natural based shampoos and conditioners
These are the ones I know. The main one I use is from curls.biz. Sometimes I may buy from these other websites, but I dont want to become a product junkie. There are faqs all over these websites that will show her what to do with her hair and that you can help her with. Here are some tips for everyday hair care:
1. Shampoo 1x/week. Apply only to scalp, not all over hair or hair will be dry.
2. If you need to wash hair often, use conditioner instead to rinse out the dirt.
3. Dont use a towel for hair! You'll cause tangles and frizz. Squeeze out some water and then apply a good moisturizing custard (from websites above)
4. Try not to use heat appliances in her hair. The less heat the better.
5. Try not to let her comb or brush her hair so much, especially when her hair is dry!Youll be looking for trouble.
6. A good leave-in conditioner is good for daily use.
If you decide to buy some of these products from the websites listed and they dont work for her, try something different. Let the perm be the last resort. Keep these websites though because even if she does get a perm, these products can also be used for permed hair too. I listed them because the products on the market now have lots of chemicals in them, bad for natural and permed hair. Regardless of natural or permed, hair needs moisture, which is one of the main reasons why people have so much hair problems. Hope I helped and god bless.

13 is certainly old enough for a perm! Tell her to go through hairstyle books and websites, to narrow down what she likes, and copy her favorites to show the hairdresser.
Tell her to treat her hair as normal, and condition a week before.
Her hair should be trimmed and conditioned the day of the perm.
She must NOT wash or wet her hair for 24 hours after the perm
. Make sure to use shampoo and conditioner for treated hair.

Well i cut hair personally and people come in all the time at her age and get perms. You should let her do whatever you are comfortable with though. Oh and also i has a perm done on me when i was like 12 and it didn't hurt me. Good luck!!!

If she has naturally wavy/curly hair a perm isn't going to do much for her. The only thing that might make it less curly is a body perm but I think she's too young for it.

She should make sure her hair is in good condition.
Has she colored or highlighted it recently?
Does she condition daily and deep condition weekly?
Does she eat a good diet or take a multivitamin?
If her hair is in good condition, it should be fine.
One way to test if hair is damaged is to fill up a cup with water (any temperature, it doesn't matter) and pluck a single strand of hair from the head. Put it in the glass. If it floats-it's healthy. If it sinks-it's damaged.
She should read up on care for curly hair online or in beauty books. You should also buy a wide-tooth comb or a pick if she goes through with it.
-Don't wash hair for 24-48 hours after the perm.
-Do not get it wet for at least 24 hours.
-Do not pull on the curls or mess with them for at least 24 hours.
-Never brush curly hair after it's dry - or prepare for the frizz and poof.
-Leave conditioner in hair for ten minutes before rinsing it out.
-Use a deep conditioner every week.
-Buy shampoos and conditioners made for permed/color-treated hair. It will help it stay moisturized and healthy.
-Shampoo 2-3 times a week. If you shampoo too much, the curls will go limp and frizzy.
-After she's done washing her hair, she should NEVER wrap it in a "towel turban" because it messes with the wave pattern.
-She should squeeze out the excess water after she's done washing her hair.
-When her hair is damp, she should spray in a leave-in conditioner then comb it through with a wide-tooth comb.
-When the hair is still a little damp, put in the styling product of choice. For firmer curls, Shape Fx Curl Booster is great. If she wants softer curls, Shape Fx Curl Miracle is the product of choice.

I say wait a couple years. My cousin got a perm at 12 before she had started her period and it only stayed curly for three days. You could wait till her period starts but i would not do it anyways because she already has curly/wavy hair it will be either too curly or just unmanageable.

She can get a perm...it doesn't matter that she hasn't started her period yet ....ask the beautician if she can look at style books at the shop and choose a look she likes and then the beautician will know what kind of perm to give her.

Loose spiral curl at best..
Take her to a salon and get a spiral SET done first, or a perm wrap set...just to let her see what it'll look like and what she's getting into.
It won't hurt her to get one, it might be a little easier for her to care for.
