i once made a whole supermarket for a 3 yr old boy and he loved it. we used all kinds of pictures from magazines, but now you could use the internet and the pictures would probably be better ang they'ed be free. We cut out pictures of lots of different products you could buy in a supermarket (like just about anythng but, we did mostly food stuff) and glued them on to cardboard or stiff paper to give them a little more bulk. you could even make them 3-D by pasting them all on to little boxes. then we made play money too, I don't remember how, but you could also cut out cardboard circles and color them and write $5 or $2.59 or whatever on them and also write the cost on each item. Oh -- keep the numbers really simple since he's only 3 yrs old. anyway, then you let him "go shopping!" you could also increase the products available in the "store" with him -- let him go through the magazines or look things up with you on the computer and you can make new things together. we did this about 25 years ago and the kid loved it.
or a summer survival kit?
come up with some ideas for new traditions you could start around celebrating birthdays that don't cost anything. like the one i heard about and we do in my family now is the kid whose birthday it is always gets their name written in the butter at the breakfast table.
and you're lucky becasue he's only 3 and he doesn't yet know all about presents. even if he's seen other kids get them, he certainly doesn't know how much money you'll be spending. he might just think something big in size might be really cool. how about a space ship made from a really big carton? cover it with aluminum fool and cut a window in it and maybe make a steering wheel of some sort (do space ships have steering wheels?!) or a control panel made out of buttons and markers. kids love big boxes!!

Puppets. Use socks or paper lunch bags or finger puppets with construction paper or printer paper and crayons if necessary. They could look like circus animals or maybe family members. He's only 3 anything new will be fun.

Try rummage sales. Many people start them on Thursdays. Ive seen lots of kids toys on those.

Otherwise, if you mean cake-wise. Do a sheet cake. Then do two cupcakes for the wheels. Just decorate the sheet cake kind of like a bus.

Okay listen why not make him a cake in the shape of a car? Listen they have all types of ideas if you check around. Go to www.google.com or askjeeves.com and you will or should be able to find all the answers to your questions there.

Good luck and Happy Birthday to your darling Boy.
