Are you artistically inclined? that is a good start. There seem to be a lot of people answering your question with negativity. don't listen to them. If this is something you really want to do, do some research. Visit tattoo shops and talk to artists. Maybe see if they would be willing to take on a "shop helper" person (probably not great pay though, if any) just to see if this is really what you want to do with yourself. If they are snobby to you, move on. Unfortunately some people think that tattoos make you cool. that's not what it's about. But please travel the proper avenues read magazines, books and talk to people who are willing to listen. Good luck!

Most states wont give a tattoo license unless you have not only an apprenticeship but a job and experience too with out proper training you wont be a tattoo artist youll be a SCRATCHER ppl like you hold back the whole profession my husband and his colleagues and those who came before him worked their butts off to get where they are you have no respect for the profession and you have no business being involved in it ppl without training spread disease and do crappy tattoos

Becoming a tattoo artist without a real apprenticeship is like becoming a doctor without going to med school.
Doomed to failure, rife with legal & safety issues - not to mention artistic catastrophes - and pretty much guaranteed to meet with *strong* disapproval by those who are in the industry from a legitimate start.
Unless you want your dream to become a nightmare, do the right thing.

unfortunately you do have to get an apprenticeship. Most states wont give you a practitioners license until you are working for a tattoo studio. Once you have found one that will take you in just go into the city hall and find out where you would need to go to take the test to get your practitioners license. Also having the practitioners license will save your butt if it comes down to someone trying to sue you. Try to find a studio that makes people sign a waiver befor they get any work done.

Laws vary from state to state. Some states require apprentice time. You have to check with the State Dept of Health in your state for the right answers.
