Swimming is the best exercise. You're not putting force on any joints and it exercises all of your muscles. the other exercise I would recommend would be Yoga.

I've enclosed a link where you can read about some natural treatments for arthritis.

I have lower back pain due to arthritis, in fact I had surgery twelve times on my spine and I have severe degenerative bone disease.
Before you start doing exercises you'd better find out if you can, you might cause more problemlems then you want. See you doctor first and let him tell you if you can exercises.
That problem you have now, sore back, may be anything from a bulging disc to a damaged nerve, you may be creating a monster if you irritate it.

I had back surgery several years ago due to back major back pain. Since I have had the surgery I was told in rehab to work on the core muscles (Stomach, sides and back muscles). this supports the back and is sometimes referred to as the girdle. I have used one of the exercise balls to do these exercises. Its not like doing situps since you really have control of how far you go back and forth. Its worked for me. I just ran my first 5k and am scheduled for another next week. The smoke always helps as well :)

There is a good back exercise that I use (I'm 48 myself, with back and joint problems due to severe OA)...it's called a cat stretch...on all fours...arch your back waaaay up (like a cat) and hold for a few seconds, then push though to your tummy and arch backwards (again like a cat)..and hold...
do several of these, several times a day...REALLY helps with lower back pain...and there is no straining, weights or torture (LOL!) involved...

I've heard that your back is only as strong as your front.
