I know you can get many home cinema systems to plug in but do these do surround sound on the normal television viewing or does the surround effect only work when watching a dvd? basically i want the surround on my normal viewing, my telly has got virtual surround sound but i personally dont think its that good and cant really make it out (although the sound is excellent) coz its only out of the front speaker on the set and dont sound like its all around the room. Can you get any surround multiple speaker systems for nomal telly watching? cheers.

Yes you can.

I also have a Panasonic Veira unit and mine has the digital optical output. Whenever there is HD programming with surround sound, I am able to output the digtial optical signal to my surround sound system and get 5.1 surround sound. So all you would need is a surround sound system with digital optical input ( also called TOSLINK ) and you can hear real surround sound from you set.

If the broadcast is digital then a HDMI or digital cable( optical or Coax/PCM is an option. This is the only way to get a Dolby Digital signal and the 5.1 surround signal to the Receiver.

If it is analog you need a set of patch cables to make at best Dolby Pro-logic II ( not bad for analog) from the TV to receiver.

I recommend you do some reading on how to select a home theater since you are new to the whole experience.

Any brand can fill you needs but it has to be configured correctly and hooked up right. Let us know what you plan to get ( once you reading and research is complete) to get hook up advice.

The true theater experience is completely subjective and every one has different tastes, so good luck!

I think XMiSpy is pulling your leg. Most people will steer you away from Bose (Most reviews on Bose say that they suck but they are not that bad but almost any reputable brand is a better value) Well done on the description of your system and needs. So many people just ask "What is a good surround sound system?" Yamaha RXV-663 receiver (HDMI switching and newer uncompressed audio formats) $550 Energy RC-Mini fronts and Rears with a RC-mini Center $1050 And an S10.3 Energy Subwoofer $500 This will sound tremendous in your room. You will probabably get other good recommendations here but you owe it to yourself to find someone who carries this set and listen to it. Audition before you buy.

You can use any surround system, but remember you will only get true surround on the TV shows that broadcast in Surround. This normally inlcudes anything in HD and most of your Prime Time programming these days.

As long as your TV has some kind of audio out, or you use a cable/satellite box, you can connect it to ANY surround system.

I've just today bought this for my setup, it's on the cheap end of the spectrum but shows that they do make what you are looking for:
