I'm guess some people can do it without help, but I couldn't. I tried for many years, but I just could NOT stop, no matter what, even though I really wanted to. I simply had no choice. Oddly enough I had tons of willpower about OTHER things; I went to college and law school and worked hard and graduated at the top of my class and worked out and was thin and, well, there was really nothing I couldn't do if I wanted it bad enough . . . but with alcohol, no such luck. I HAD to drink, if you know what I mean.
So I did go to AA. I figured, what could it hurt? I couldn't be any worse off than I was; I couldn't work anymore, my marriage was dead, my kids were scared of me, I couldn't get through a single day sober . . . you get the picture.
Well I did get sober in AA, and I haven't had a drink in a long time. Almost 9 years now. My life is wonderful, really wonderful. And I've got to give AA the credit, because on my own I was destined to die drunk; I just didn't have whatever those other people do who can quit on their own. The God thing did freak me out at first--I'm not religious at all--but you know what, that hasn't been a problem at all . . . really, all that's required is an understanding that you, personally, are not God.
Anyway, maybe you'll figure this out on your own, but if you find that you still just can't quit drinking, you might want to give AA a try. It worked for me.

my husband did and he had a substantial alcohol problem. He did something horrible and that night after he passed out i hid the bottles and in the morning told him i was leaving. It's been 3 months and he hasnt had a drink since. I am so proud of him and keep hoping. Ive almost been able to forgive what he did even tho not everyone in my family has but the longer he doesnt drink the more everyone is coming around. Everyone said that he couldnt do it without rehab but i think that made him more determined to prove them wrong. good luck

Get rid of all the alcohol in your house. Don't go out with people who drink. Do this for a very long time until you are comfortable with your decision not to drink.

OK, this is what happened to a friend of mine. He drank so much that the doctor actually told him that if he quit cold turkey, he could go into seizures. His other choice was rehab. So he did it himself. He gave himself a number of beers he could have in a day. So he started say with 6. After a week, then it was 5, etc... He didn't believe in AA because of the God thing. And he's clean now. Good luck, Godspeed.

Brother, take it from someone who has been drinking for about 30 years, there is no way to stop drinking without help if you don't have the willpower or desire to stop on your own.drinking has messed up my life because i don't want to get help for it so if you don't wanna end up like me, prison and no life, get some help.

You need to change your habits. Find other things to fill your time. If you used to drink after work, sign up for a class or something else that will keep you busy during that time.
