The continuous prompting really annoys even when the system isn't functioning properly that voice is still going on and on. I had about a dozen items in a bag and the voice told me to remove the bag and my change. I had not even paid at that point so I told the assistant and she said do as it says. I collected £17 change and my receipt, picked up the bag and went away from the counter. I reported it to a manager before leaving the store and he said that the machine is always right. So home I went. The tills were closed down for a week after that episode as the problem persisted and the losses must have been horrific.

I used one recently, and bought an Xbox 360 as part of a £60 total buy. Paid by card and had to have someone come over to tell the system I was old enough for the 18 cert game, and to remove the security box from the game. After he'd done that, it printed out a receipt, which I had to sign. I guess its all part of the normal security in place on all bank cards - if you go on a spending spree, buying lots of things, then eventually you'll find yourself needing authorisation. Happens all the time at work (London Underground) especially when people are buying expensive season tickets.

We had them installed about 18 months ago in my local Tesco but they caused so many problems and a member of staff was needed to help on a permanent basis. During a recent refurbishment they were removed. Tesco were probably losing too much money as you say.

They're great for the dishonest people and quick for those of us who are going to pay for everything we have bought! On the flipside though, Tesco can employ less people and make more money thus increasing their range, killing little shops and ripping off the poor buggers that grow their produce.
Supermarkets and big companies are ruthless.

I tried but got in such a muddle Some of the bar codes wouldn't go in and in the end a Tesco girl had to help. I haven't bothered with them since.,

They are fun when they work properly but sometimes then won't scan and you have to keep asking the assistant to help. They can be really annoying! - The self service tills not the assistants.
One till kept telling me to put items in the bag when I already had - grrr

i used them when I was in the uk...and they are a bit iffy. But the ones we have here in the usa are getting to be pretty good, once they have all the bugs worked out you'll enjoy them. I love the ones in Walmart, because theres no lines, you just scan your stuff, swipe your card, and you are off!...hardly need to pause walking out the door to pay for the stuff!

Idon't like me. We have them here in the republic of Ireland. I don't have to use them that much because I use a trolley. They are only for baskets. If I had a basket I would not use them. After all what are staff getting paid for?
