There are 100 million AK's in the world (or 50-60 million depending on who you ask) Ak ammunition and weapons are found in the arsenals of 160 countries. The price of Ak's and their ammunition have been steadily dropping and many nations are trying to turn over their cold war stockpiles of ammunition. It is a matter of economics that the Ak (most common rifle in the world and their subsequent mass supply of ammunition) will be found in the arsenals of many countries in the world. I mean there are 10 ak assault rifles for every fal or m-16. Also let us get to the basics of an AK. They are easy to manufacture, they are unbelievably reliable due to its powerful ejection and cycling mechanisms. The barrels are designed better to resist the corrosive ammunition found in communism countries. And best of all they are cheap. You can pick up ak's for fifty bucks in africa or even 5 dollars from deserters. The ammunition supply is guaranteed, and the bullet is larger than the common nato rounds found in american assault rifles.

The Chinese model of the Ak-47 has a foldable stock and is cheaply made (like everything else made in China). The original Ak-47 was made 2 years after World War II and is more expensive because it had a wooden stock and full metal. The Chinese made Ak uses synthetic fibers and plastics to bring the cost down for metal and wood.

For Communist forces, the answer is that the AK 47 was a Soviet weapon, and in the polarized world of the Cold War they got their support from the Soviet Union. For terrorist forces, they will use whatever is at hand. AK47 and AKM rifles are everwhere, making them cheap and easy to get. Ammunition is also easier to get. In Iraq especially, since the AK47 was used by Saddam's army, when it collapsed AK47s went everywhere. AK's are also renowned for reliability under the worst conditions. Their design is based on the American M1 Garand (legendary for being reliable under almost any conditions) and the German STG44.

It is the cheapest, and most reliable and easiest to use gun in the world.
All its parts are interchangeable and easy to manufacture. It has been around since '47 so there are plenty of spares for it.
I've heard stories of AK's being pulled out of rivers (after being left there for months), cleaned off then used within an hour.

The smaller 5.56 guns are only designed to wound the enemy, that way you tie up 3 or 4 others while they try to drag him to safety. The AKs are designed for more stopping power and are ruggedly made, compared to the plastic rubbish the US and other countries use. One of the most ridiculous stories I read was the Australian army using the Steyrs and they found that after a couple of hours hard use, the damned things started melting!!! Gimme a old 7.62 SLR anyday.

Jeesh, the Russians and Chi-Coms practically give them away for hard currency and "Diplomacy". Ever price an M-16, you can get 20 AK-47's for one! Our stuff never gets given away and usually dies for lack of maintenance and care if they find their way into the wrong hands.

They are pretty much dummy proof unless you are an Al-Qaida leader in Iraq trying to show off for the homies.
