OK all you trainers / dog showers out there, I've got a question that I can't seem to find the answer to. I'm entering my smooth collie puppy in a couple of outdoor shows in a couple of days. I use a martingale/limited-slip (AKA greyhound) collar and a nylon leash. I'd like to know if there are any restrictions to using these, or will I have use a slip-type (I.e. choker) collar?

You can use any collar/leash that you want, even a rope. ( no kidding! One girl's dog won with a rope) of course pinch collars are out..Martingales are fine.
You just want to use what shows off your dog the best, and distracts the least. You don't want to draw attention to anything but your dog.

Your own clothing should set a backdrop for the dog..either by contrast or a neutral color. .Solid colors are best.

Don't wear clothing that highlights your jugs or fanny bouncing, as 'that' movement distracts from your dog.

Wear black or brown/tan shoes, so the dogs gait/foot movement shows best..

Keep the leash light, so it folds in your hand, crumpled. If a dog needs heavy gear, he isn't ready for the ring.

Note: I show sighthounds. I have never seen a thick collar being used..Our typical collars are cords..or fine chains, about like the western bolo tie cord.

Dog May be shown on slip collar, martingales, or buckles collars. There are different preferences with some different breeds. If you have a question about a particular type of collar you should contact the AKC directly.

Lots of people show on a martingale, but usually only sighthounds are shown on a thicker greyhound collar.

In general, it's best to use the lightest leash/collar combination that you can easily handle your dog with. Use a color that blends in with your dog, you want the lead (and you) to be as inconspicuous as possible.

I always used a Martingale with a leather lead. It all depends on what's comfortable for you and what makes the dog look better.
I dont know of any restrictions that AKC has as far as leads or collars go.

NOTE: I just read Chetco's answer. She right don't make your self stand out it's the dog thats supposed to do that.

A martingale is acceptable. You might want to observe what the other smooth collie exhibitors are using and get advice from them. The important thing is that you can easily handle your dog and that he knows the difference between his show lead and his day to day lead. That way, he will "turn on" when you put the show lead on him.
