I'm having a dessert and dance reception, there will be alcohol but we need good music to get people moving. 80's and 90's is good. Contemporary dance music is cool but I don't want my grandparents to hear a lot of cursing. I don't mind the obligatory "cha-cha" song, or chicken dance whatever. Maybe some good oldies - i want to see grandma bust a move.

Oh, you made me laugh with your last statement!!!
It's all in the variety, some classic rock - Elvis, etc., some MoTown - the Supremes, etc.; some 70s disco - Bee Gees; other 80s - The Guess Who, The Cars, Air Supply, etc.
Make sure there are lots of polkas, some two-steps, a schottische or two, a bunny hop, etc. Those all get the older people up, and then the younger ones can learn these classics, too, and everyone has fun that way!
Don't forget YMCA and Rasputin by Boney M!

What i did at my wedding is i allowed my guest to pick songs. my dj put out a wish list beside his booth and people would request songs. the dj is an expert and they will "feel the crowd" he will test some music and trust me he will know what to put.
What got everybody up at my wedding was Billie Jean from Micheal Jackson (i didn't think that would) but everybody got up and danced. Also Drop it like it's hot from Snoop, (it was in at the time). The dj played it as people requested it.
My friend is getting married in a month and she is doing the same thing. Requests are great.

Put a list of "must haves" to your dj and the rest allow your guests to choose.

Good Luck

Ours is going to be am i able to have this dance its from extreme college musical, i comprehend style of peculiar, yet have been purely dancing to a certian spot the place the words merely sounded fairly loving and proper to us. "its like catching lighting fixtures the probabilities of looking somebody such as you... your one in a million the probabilities of feeling the way i do... And with each and every step at the same time we merely shop on getting greater advantageous... Thats the only section we are having and we are beginning and ending with a non secular song. me and my Fiance took my neices to verify it and whilst we the two heard the song we appeared at one yet another and charm of latest it replaced into what we could have enjoyed out first song to assert.

bubukittypoo,

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! Try visiting http://www.partymusicwiki.com/. It has a ton of wedding music on it that you can preview on iTunes, and it even has a pre-made wedding playlist that's got that energetic, safe-for-3yr-to-80yr-old music you're looking for! One of my friends used it just recently to chose out his wedding reception music and he said it made the whole deal a lot easier.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Anthony

Are you having a DJ? If so, leave it to them. Mention the ages of the guests, state that you don't want songs with foul language, and let them do their job.
