I'm having my 6th tattoo done later this month and I'm having writing going down my spine, it's quite large but will only take 1 sitting my artist said, anyway I was wondering how much it hurts, here is the other tattoos I have and the amount of pain I experienced if it helps...
Russia in writing on left hip - no pain
'love' in hebrew on right hip - tiny bit of pain
paw print on left foot - some pain, more than 'love'
anklet accross left ankle - VERY painful, no tears but incredibly painful
design on lower back - small amount of pain but took an hour so got used to it, felt quite nice as artist went on.
If that helps, can anybody give an idea how much this one is going to hurt? Many thanks.

Hon, every one is different. How you deal with pain is going to dictate a lot of what happens during the session. I have lots of tats and I found that the one over my spinal column didn't hurt half as much as I thought it would. I had heard a lot of people say that tats over bony areas like the ankle and the spine hurt a lot whereas tats over fatty areas like the breasts or stomach didn't hurt as much.
Well.... my spine didn't hurt much but my belly, specially close to the navel, hurt like a zillion little wasp stings. I had a hard time concentrating on my breathing to stay calm. The worst part was over my kidneys, another place that has a little bit of a fatty layer under the skin. Who's doing the tattooing also affects the amount of pain. One tattooer I know grins when he says "no pain, no gain". His nickname is Digger and you can bet his tats hurt a lot. Another tattooer I know has a light hand and I barely felt his tats, definetely the easiest tats I ever got.
I guess my answer doens't really help you out much, all I can say is try to go in without expectations as you might be pleasantly surprised and concentrate on your breathing as that helps you deal with the pain.

You must have a professional tattoo artist, especially for the spine. The spine tattoo will hurt because it is on the bone. If you are thin or average weight there it will hurt more. Some people cant handle this type of pain. Also, If you happen to have an epidural sometime in the future, if the tatoo is in the way of the area they need to insert the needle, the ink from a tattoo could be deposited into the epidural, leading to later neurological complications. Oh, and dont drink any alcohol, it will make your blood thinner and makes things more difficult for the both of you. Good Luck.

I have a large eagle on my left fore arm reaching across my back. The spinal tat will feel very much like your anklet. If you could stand that one you can stand the spinal though some people are much more sensitive to the back then the ankle. You can always have the out line done first which is the easier part and have the fill in later. I have several tats and one is on the breast bone and that's the one I felt worse so far. Good luck. :)

I have about six inches on just like work directly on my spine. I clenched my jaw here and there. Keep in mind it was my first tattoo I've gotten. It was more annoying than anything to be honest. I'm planning on getting my second on my wrist soon. Anyways. On a scale it probably would be rated 6 out of ten. It was more annoying than painful.

It will hurt, I can vouch for that. But it sounds like it won't last long and is just lettering. Sooooo.....not unbearable and it's not like it's your first tattoo. Remember to breath - I had a tendency to hold my breath, especially towards the end when after 3 hours of fill in I had just about had enough. And ask for as many breaks as you need :)

I have the top 1/3 of my back covered and all of the work right on the spine was really painful. You will notice that you will feel the pain down your arms into your fingers when they stimulate the nerves. Is it worth it? Heck yeah! I love it, but it did hurt worse than the other tattoo by far.
