No. A just graduated second Lt. or even a warrent officer outranks The Sargent Major of The Army. But, any good officer of any rank knows to respect a Sargent Major and listen to his/her advice and consider it before making a decision.

But the Sgt. Major of the Army does have a protocol rank of major general.
That means he is given the same courtesy and honors that a major general is given, when he travels around the country .
