My daughter is 2. For the past few days, everytime I change her diaper, the smell is so bad! She is getting plenty of fluids and even seems to be going to the bathroom more often. I noticed that her vaginal area is a little red, but it doesn't seem to bother her. She does have a little bit of a runny nose.

You are giving classic urinary tract infection symptoms. Foul smelling urne can mean an infection...its red there cause of the infected uringe...perhaps getting a yeast infection too or diaper rash as well..also a sign of a UTI is the frequency of going to the bathroom. I am 23 and have UTI"s several times ayear due to a bladder problem due to a disability so kind of an expert on them. One other thing maybe ask her if she has a tummy ache that would too more or less confirm it. I do not always have pain but frequency and foul smelling urine is my cue as well. So perhaps take her to dr. She might be geting it from perhaps a bubble bath. I hope this helps!!

PS try cranberry juice too it helps!!

My Urine Smells Like Yeast

Sounds like she may have a urinary tract infection. Give her unsweetened cranberry juice and lots of water. If it doesn't go away in the next couple of days, see a doctor about an antibiotic.
Note: yeast infections are often a problem after a UTI because of the antibiotic. Get some information about Candida yeast. It is toooo common a problem and can be cured with probiotics you can buy in a health food store; but ask a holitstic practitioner.

I thought all urine smelled bad. :o) But seriously, maybe she has a yeast infection? If her privates are a little red, that could be the cause or it could be something she ate/drank. If she doesn't seemed bothered by it, I would probably give it a couple of days before dragging her to a doctor. It could be nothing. However, I would probably just check with her dr just in case they think it's important enough to bring her in.

Well I know what you are talking about because both of my girls had the same problem at around the same age as your little one. I don't know what it was but they drank plenty of fluids as well. I know others who's kids had the same problem and it's gone away. My kids urine doesn't smell bad anymore. They are now 4 and 6. Sorry I couldn't tell you what it might be but it could possibly go away.

Are you on any medication? ANYTHING? Has your diet changed? 9X out of 10 this is caused by either medication or diet but if you are not on anything new and your diet is pretty consistent, it may mean something is up with your kidneys. Going and seeing a doctor would be a very good idea. There is no reason to take the chance that this is a kidney problem.

As an RN, I would say that if the urine is also cloudy or dark, the child may have an infection and should be seen by a Doctor.
Does it smell like ammonia?...another reason to seek professional opinion

Water, Water, and MORE WATER...and if she is still having this problem take her to the doctor, and it might not be a bad idea to take her now anyway. Infections usually cause bad odors and if she has a UTI or something similar this could be the cause.

Ammonia, [can cause the strong smell] infection, teething, lack of WATER [not other fluids]. If she is going to the toilet more, sounds like an infection of some type. Take her and one of the smelly diapers to the doctor ASAP. [Please don't panic at this suggestion--diabetes??]

Sounds very much like a urinary infection to me. Have her doctor check and he will probably start her on anti biotics right away. Don't delay, if this is an infection, it can get nasty pretty quick.
