Well like in many Asian counries there is a concept of face. Acting inappropraite or zany in society can be costly for them. I lived in China and had many female friends who were funny, nutty, and very interesting to be around. China is opening up in many ways . Japanese women still face hideous sexism in their society, yet one on one I have had many crazy Japanese female friends whom have left a great impression on me.

I only know a few Japanese girls, and they are westernized. So I would not know.
