I'm currently on unemployment and just received a job offer for a position that would bring in decent pay. I'd have to learn much about the job responsibilities, but it will serve as a good learning experience. The job is temporary though, lasting only several months to a year.

I have other interviews to go to this week and next. I may end up being more interested in them, but nothing's in the bag yet, obviously, so what do I do? Accept the first offer and go to the other interviews to see if they want me and I want to work there, and take it from there? I feel like accepting and then quitting is like burning bridges, yet I can't extend the time for me to accept this position.

I'm confused -- the place that offered me the position is desperate for help, and they have a good name in the business. Yet, it's temporary, so they may not be able to keep me and I'll be unemployed once more. I feel like I'd be used in a way by going there. But, I am unemployed now...What should I do?

If they aren't going to offer you a permanent job, then I wouldn't worry about burning the bridges. When your unemployed, you have to do whats right for you, not for the company.

I would accept the job, do more interviews and take it from there.

Accept the job offer. It's there and they are desperate. The other interviews may not even offer you a placement. Even though the job may be temporary, if you work really hard and show the company what a valuable asset you are they will probably offer you a permanent position. If they have a good name in the business then thats an even stronger reason to accept their offer, it will look good on your c.v. in future. Not to forget the experience and what you will learn. If you think this company is worth it I would accept the offer and go for it guns blazing. Work like a demon and show them your capabilities. Have more confidence in yourself. By accepting their offer, that company will be greatful to you and that's already points for you. Good Luck and all the best!

I'd consider taking the job- if the pay is acceptable, and since it's a company with a good rep. You'll earn a salary, get good experience, and as you say, the upcoming interviews are not guaranteed. It is conceivable that the temp job could become permanent, or longer term- perhaps that's an avenue you could persue if you accept the job, or, once you have your foot in the door, ask about other divisions or departments. You can always job hunt while you're working there, if in fact the job is truly a temp. Good luck.

Accept and keep looking. I was in that same position and after working at my company as a temp for a while I ended up getting an internal positon that was exactly what I want to do. If I hadn't been temping here I wouldn't have had a chance at getting the job I have. Don't stay unemployed if you don't have to.
