For information, I say "4" rhyming with "door", "floor", "more", "bore" "snore" etc.
"For" is a shorter sound... "like the "o" sound in "tog", "fox" or "lot", although I appreciate that not everybody makes these distinctions...

Yup, but originally it came from people that were charged per letter for text messages. Less letters, less charged. Since then it has become common place and beyond annoying. If you were still being charged like that then I can see it's use, but not for any other reason...it's just lazy shorthand.

Do you mean:
1) Since you say "sound" the same, you seem to be implying verbal sentences...which doesn't make sense at all since you couldn't really tell the difference between "4" and "for"
2) So you must mean written sentences... which also doesn't make sense since things don't "sound the same" when written.
But to answer your question...no, it doesn't really annoy me on an informal communication.
ps. My Dad who grew up in New York pronounced
Mary
Marry
Merry all differently...???

ok well you provided examples of rhymes for '4'
how is saying 'for' any different.. i believe they sound the same unless you are able to provide more rhymes to prove me wrong :s
however this is not a text with limited space and the full word can be used..
but there is an image thing and it can be percieved that it is 'cooler' to write like that and i say why not it is still understandable and it allows for evolution of the language..
not always good but none the less sometimes these things make it to the dictionary...

They are identical in sound but different in meaning. To use a 4 to represent the word FOR is rather lazy and slovenly - another example of text language. So yes, it can be slightly annoying.

You still only get so many letters for your 12p or so. That is why people still abbreviate. I recently sent a text to someone & it cost me for three because it was so long, but I write them in long hand & put all the punctuation in. For sounds like 'cos & 4 sounds like how many.

They shouldn't sound the same, if someone is speaking correctly. '4' is a longer sound, as you say. I suppose its use in sentences spills over from 'texting shorthand.' Yes, it does annoy me when used other than in a text message.
