Go to a professional. They have special scissors to thin the hair without cutting it.

1.start with a smoothing shampoo, i use pantene pearl shine.
2.then use got 2b sleek gel on wet hair, just put it on your fingers and work it through your wet hair.
3.then blowdry straight down (yes, your hair will get poofy, but this will eventually lead to thin and straight hair)
4.then use a straightening iron on small sections of your hair until your whole head is done. (i do this in two parts, the bottom half of my head, then the top)
5.suddenly, you have very skinny hair!
6.finish it with a little hansen super shine spray to smooth it out and keep it from getting poofey, and you are done.

Most stylists have scissors (yes I know) that are used to thin out hair. They are not normal scissors, they have slots so when you cut the hair it only takes out part of it. Your other option is to have it layered. If you are not wanting it to look like it is layered most stylists should be able to layer it from the underneath so it looks smooth to everyone.

Those scissors you're talking about are called thinning shears. They don't take off length, just bulkiness. Ask your stylist to use those on your hair.
