Depends where you train, i do Kung Fu and we do lots of sparring and pad work. We look at forms to but make sure we can use the techniques from those forms in real world fight situations.
So i'm guessing you want to be a UFC fighter, seems you have the right attitude what with crying about something you read on this site. MMA is mixed martial arts bro, so take up another as well, as Kung fu improves cardio, strength and conditioning (And striking, but apparently you don't do sparring), we work on ground work, locks takedowns. Perhaps traditional Kung Fu won't be great in a fight but many modern day school have adapted.
Although i am taking up either judo or kickboxing too:).

Seriously man, calm down.
You gain what you gain out of every art. And in training mind, body, and soul, Kung Fu is great.
The way I view Martial Arts is as a tool, every technique you learn is just another tool in your tool box.
Once you learn that tool, you have to learn how to use it. There are plenty techniques in Kung Fu that can be very effective if you spar and learn how to actually use it for combat.
Don't let anything you read on the internet get you down, everyone is going to have opinions.
You still have a lot of growing up to do my friend. You are very young and have a lot of life. Kung Fu shouldn't be your life, fighting shouldn't be your life. School, and preparing for your future should be your life right now.
The other stuff is what you enjoy, (in a few years sex will beat out everything else, and it will be the reason why you do everything trust me) and will only help develop you as a person.
Your training in Kung Fu is great, because it helps you acheive discipline, humility, respect, and self worth. It isn't effective at MMA, but it is effective at making you be a better person, as all Martial Arts are.
There is nothing wrong with taking Martial Arts for enjoyment and self betterment, and that is what Kung Fu has brought you.
Training 4 months in Kung Fu isn't a waste of time, nor is it your whole life. Suck it up, quit the melodrama and be a man.
You want to be a fighter? Take things that teach you to fight. But also prepare as a back up a life of success. You can be injured or hurt, and the career span of fighters isn't that long.
You need to work on skills that will truly pay the bills, keep school a priority, work towards a real education.
Use the lessons learned in Martial Arts to better yourself as a person, not just a fighter.
Build a base of solid fundamentals in wrestling, submission and striking, and work hard on conditioning. When you are of age, then you can start competing and figuring out what works for you and what doesn't.
Don't let any set back get you down, and 4 months is a very short time.
Your dedication is admirable and if you truly want something this bad, you can do anything to acheive it.
Just chill out, look at things reasonably and logically. Work hard, and do what you love.
Good luck my friend.

Get a grip! Four months is nothing. Also it does not mean that some of the things you have already learned have no value at all whats-so-ever. You can go and take another martial art and even do MMA and I bet if you train in any long enough you will find that some of the things you have already learned in Kung Fu have some purpose and association with other concepts in other arts.

Pffft this is only the beginning for you. i have cross-trained in MMA and am also a kung fu student as well. You have to adapt what you know to be a great fighter. every piece of knowledge you have gives you one more advantage over someone else. continue your training in kung fu. for example i combine elements of shaolin chin-na with Japanese and Brazilian jujitsu to become well rounded in grappling. in the end my dedication will always be to using what ever works against my opponent. martial arts is a science requiring years of study and practice for its successful use.remember what Bruce lee says
"one can function freely if he is 'beyond system' the man who is really serious, with the urge to find out what truth really is, has no style at all. he lives in what is"
and also what sun tzu says
"do not let your tactics which have gained you one victory. but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances"
i know that years of study seems like a long time. but in reality time will fly. martial science will start to drive you. you could watch UFC and completely decipher an entire fight. thats just an example but its little things that you will do naturally.building your knowledge. in the end you will take what you have started and hopefully commit to constant and never ending improvement of yourself

If what you say is true, dumb kung fu. If you have realized that it will not work in real life then why stay? If you want real life combat, and you now know kung fu isn't going to help you then just leave. There is no shame in seeking truth in combat. If you haven't yet got there keep looking. Never, I mean never, stick to something out of some warped sense of dedication. You do not do yourself any good by remaining. As well if you truly want to honor kung fu then you must leave it. Sticking with it and not wishing to is not good.

There is one fighter in the UFC who uses kung fu and jujitsu as his fighting style. He's not the best, but he does fight well.
Also , the UFC and all the other MMA sporting events have rules. You can't poke someone in the eye, kick them in the groin, or maliciously try to break or manipulate their small joints.
If you want to learn a sport, take up volleyball.

4 months????? Did you mean 40 years??? 4 months???
In 4 months this is the discipline you have developed??? 4 MONTHS!!!!.... If you want to compete, notice I said compete and not get your butt kicked, 4 months of ANY discipline will allow you sell beer in the stands... I've been training and fighting for years across multiple disciplines.... MMA fighting is NOT about developing your body and soul.... It's about developing skills & experience around striking, submissions and grappling so you can survive in this profession.... It is not a sport, hobby or something you train for at the local Karate store... This is a professional way of life.... 4 MONTHS! You need to commit your life!

Take a deep breath and relax. It's going to be ok. Let me guide you.
Now that you're calm, listen to me very carefully grasshopper.
Go learn Bl0w J0b Jitsu.
Learn to mount grown men as if you were the headliner in a live gay porn review. Then learn to talk sh1t like you are driven by excessive testosterone and an extra Y chromosome. Be sure to really work the tough-guy image.
Next, be ready to spend a lot of money buying your way up through the mma schools with the connections to UFC. It will cost a lot of money, but in time with an extensive cash outlay and moderate skill, you too can get on TV and roll around in the octagon.
Just make sure that nobody can see your hard on when you do the rear mount.

Aside from the obvious fact that you are just bieng a jerk off now.
I'm posting this to people who maybe ARE in that situation and read this for real.
IF you train REALISTICALLY and against a RESISTING opponent and CROSS-TRAIN then your training may not have been wasted and it might have provided you with a good base to then expand.
CMA is not worthless if taught properly, as I said before, that is also like saying a nuclear bomb is not worthless without plutonium- however most CMA schools don't have plutonium and are just dropping a hunk of metal on thier opponent instead of a nuke. (whats with me and nukes today?)
However, if you didn't train REALISTICALLY then your training is bs.
Ask yourself these questions to get an idea:
1- Do we train with resistance?
2- Do we ever spar?
3- Do we spar full-contact and realistically? (not point-sparring)
4- Do we wear pajamas? (einstien developed a scientific formula where the probabiliy of a CMA school providing poor training or LARPing is directly related to whether they wear "traditional chinese clothes" its called his CMA/LARP ratio)
5- Does my teacher mention "chi" or "dim mak" seriously?
6- How often do I hear the phrase "too deadly to train"?
7- How often do I hear "we don't spar because it is too deadly"?
8- How does my teacher deal with the subject of grappling and groundfighting?
If your answers to questions are "no" for 1-3 or "often" for 6-7, yes for #4 then you should start to worry.
If your answer to number 5 is "yes"- leave immediately. You can also feel free to spit in your teacher's face and have sex with his wife on the way out as he obviously can't fight so he can't do anything to you anyway (unless his wife is so ugly that that is punishment).
Also a good outlet to cross-train can be found here at the bullshido website. People use the forum as a link to hook up for periodic cross-training.
I won't be at the one in june/july, I will be attending the big ny one in sept/oct/august.
http://www.bullshido.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31
If you really want to "test" your CMA, then show up and see how you match up with ppl there- although in all honesty after 4 months you might not be able to gague that even if you are training realistically. You can get a feel for it though and it isn't time wasted.
