Microsoft Word is a word processor intended to type and format text documents.

Powerpoint is a presentation package intended for slideshows and similar presentations.

When _I_ do it, though, I use openoffice.org which is a free, open-source word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and database package that is MS Office-compatible.
