Police find a man dead in his home in what appears to be a suicide. There is a gun next to him and a bullet in his head.

There is also a tape recorder near him, with a tape inside. The police press play and listen to it. They hear the man's voice - "my life is a mess, I cant take it anymore" then the gunshot is heard.

The police realise this is a murder. How?

because if he had killed himself he wouldn't have been able to stop the recording and rewind?

The tape recorder was left behind, so the murderer made it look like a suicide instead of a murder while leaving evidence that it was a murder.

The murderer had to have been there to record and stop the recording or else it would have recorded long after the gunshot. He would have also had to have been there so he could rewind the tape.

the cop performed a standard voice analysis proceedure on the tape recording and also checked the gun blast residue on the gun and the man's hands. he calculated the bullet entry and realised that the man was left handed but the bullet exit wound was on the lefthand side.
oh and the tape was rewound to the beginning of the recording

If the man had shot himself, he wouldn't have been able to switch off the tape so it would have kept recording until the end. The police would have had to rewind the tape before they could press play.

Don't laugh - I'm rubbish at these things, but thought I would have a go.

Someone had to have stopped and rewound the tape after the gun went off

the tape can't rewind itself to start at the beginning if it was a suicide the tape would've been kept on playing or just be at the end of the thing

The tape would have to be rewound when the police found it, so someone else killed the man and rewound the tape.

Because if this was suicide, the tape recorder would still have been recording!

Someone has obviously rewound the tape otherwise they'd have to have rewound the tape to listen to it, not just press play!
