I read somewhere that some of Hubbard's theories were inspired by the Indian sacred vedic texts. Does anyone here know what are the similarities?

Are there affinities with any other religion (Buddhism, for example?) If so, what are they?

PS: I am not in favor or against scientology. I am just doing research to be able to discern truth from myth. Thanks all for your help.

In the Phoenix lectures Hubbard talked about the Vedas a little bit. He said it was Scientology's earliest ancestor. He mentioned a couple points but the one I remember the best is this:
"Through your self all troubles are created, through your self all pain is created, through your self all pain is resolved.”
Well it was something similar to that. The Vedas are chants. That chant is very similar to the Scientology principle that all problems of the mind are created by self and can be solved by self.

Hinduism spawned Buddhism 2500 years ago.

The Vedas are the oldest texts on the planet and deal with various aspects of philosophy and psychology.

On the other hand the Xian texts of The Goat Herders' Guide to the Galaxy deal mainly with the psychopathic ramblings of insane sand dwellers who saw gods in every mirage.

Scientology? A old friend was interested in that cult back in the 60s. He over-heard a bloke saying to Ron L Hubbard: They'll never go for that. And Ron replying: Let's see how stupid they really are.

You gotta remember one thing: There's real good money to be made from religion IF you can keep a straight face.

I don't know much about Scientology, I just refered to it after reading your question. Many people are inspired with the Vedas, since the vedas are the first known scriptures in human history. But Vedas deal with human nature, philosophy, human psychology, secret of life and death etc in a great deal as you never see anywhere. Great ancient sages of India discovered it from meditation and they called it eternal truth which was existing eternally and they called themselves as seers of it and not founders. That is why Hinduism has no single founder. Truth is one and anyone can see it if they want.

Vedas are huge and it is a lot to learn. Those are the basic scriptures of Hinduism and the essence of the text is in Upanishads also known as Vedanta. Vedanta deals with the human existance and why we are here and what we are. It analyzes human nature so brilliantly that any person of any religion should read it.

Vedanta is made simple for the normal people like us again with another holy scripture of Hinduism which is "Bagavad Gita". In it Lord Krishna is advicing his disciple Arjuna about the secret of life, death, soul etc. The teachings are so brilliant. You won't find anywhere any dogmas like the biblical religions and it gives the complete freedom to think and analyze and question.

The short answer is: Hubbard pulled Scientology out of his @ss, and never had a single shred of evidence to back up ANYthing he said.

He was a hack science fiction author, for crissakes!
