Why do you take a shower or bath? To get clean, of course.
Well, dogs can't turn on showers or run bath water. Nor do they have hands that can hold soap and wash cloths. All they have is a slurpy wet tongue and extra vertebrae in their spine so they can REACH "there."
So what's a doggie to do?
As for licking your face - well, that's a sign of respect - in the wild, subordinate dogs will lick the face of the dominant dog as a sign of respect. OK so it comes at an inopportune time - as in just after he "cleans himself." But that's just as likely to happen after he eats (peeew-ee) or drinks (sluurrrp!) or chews something dead (gross!) as after he "cleans himself." (eeew!)
That's just the way dogs are. Oh. and it's also one of the reasons why some cultures believe that dogs are "unclean" animals. Dogs can be gross at times. But I still love them.

He licks his butt to clean it, maybe if you cleaned him every day he wouldnt need to clean himself. and maybe he licks your face because he likes you lol. but dont worry about him licking your face, because dogs have some sort of chemical on their tounge which is like a disinfection.

He may need the glands in his anus emptying take him to a vet his anus is probably hot .
Oh he loves you so much dont shu him away you will hurt his feelings , at least you know him and it isnt a one night stand that wants you to lick his butt

To clean itself. As nasty as it may seem. It has been said that a dogs mouth is cleaner than any part of a human. (although I am not sure about this)
