my boyfriend complains of tingling, stabbing, hot needles, and sharp tension in his back and legs. hes one of those types who wont go to the doctor for anything. but i got scared when he actually made a doc appt.(that means its really bad) about a couple months ago while he walked his feet would not respond to movement causing him to trip. like when he went to step his foot wouldnt move and pretty much be paralized for a minute or two followed by burning hot sensations also losing other motor skills and progressing. sometimes he has to pull over and let me drive. now what accompanies his severe pain are little bumps on his hand. not blisters or rash they look like little tiny warts. and when his pain is less the bumps go away. i thought it was shingles but he doesnt get rashes or chickenpox like sores. and another funny thing is im starting to develope the same symptoms and i had a few sore days with 1 bump idendical to his on my hand. what the heck is it?

An important test would be for syphilis, but more importantly he should see a neurologist who will examine him and determine what dermatome (pattern in terms of nerve distribution) he has. Also it would be important to go over his family history and see if there is a history of autoimmune disease such as lupus or myasthenia gravis or spinal cord disease. It is possible the rash is not connected to his lower extremity symptoms, but the sooner you get him in to see a doctor the better. I would advice if you live in a metropolitan area that he go to the Emergency Room, he can and will be seen by a neurologist and have some blood serologies sent that will only help speed things up when he has the appointment with his doctor. An MRI of his lower back may be helpful as well.

Make sure he has an appointment - and follow through with going. Perhaps it's just a very odd viral issue but I'd get a full work up because things aren't getting better - any time you have issues with motor skills - it's best to have an MD give you the best answer. Don't put it off another day.

I have no idea what is causing your boyfriend's problems, but the problems are obvious symptoms of something that is damaging his nerves. The type of nerve damage you are describing becomes permanent if it continues for too long. He should see his regular doctor or a neurologist very soon to avoid life-long problems.
