Yankee originally comes from "Yankee traders" or the "Yankee" style of ship that used to trade between the colonies and other countries. These were produced in the northern states. Americans are often called "Yanks", short for Yankee, in the UK. During the civil war Yankees were the northern troops, southerners were call "Rebs" or "Johnny Reb" etc.

The word Yankee is used by people of the southern part of the US in regards to the northern US people. It is also used by many Europeans when speaking of people from the US. However the word itself is a Native American word that means person with white skin. So most people use the word improperly.

No...people from the Northern U.S. are sometimes called Yankees by Southerners...the history goes all the back to the Civil War...think "New York Yankees"

"Yankee" is someone from north of the Mason-Dixon.
And many Southerners still refer to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression.
(PS. I live in Florida but miss Charleston SC.)
