My nephew supposedly has ADD. He only comes over the house for holidays or special events. But, every time he does, disaster strikes! He destroys not only his own gifts, but other people's, as well as decorations! After the party, we find his nose-pickings plastered to the wall in various locations. Anyone with a similar problem? What do I do?

The boy is Hyperactive, therefore he more likely has "ADHD", Since you are not the parent, there is very little you can do, but watch after him closely when he's in your home. You can try to influence his parents to get him under psychiatric care and medication. Trouble is most medication is designed to get him through a school day and wears off by the child gets home or is not in school, which still wouldn't really prevent your problem with him. Just watch him like a hawk!

That sounds like ADHD, not ADD. I work with kids with both problems. He may not be able to control the being distructive, but the nose-pickings being left on the walls is just disgusting, and sounds more like an issue with his parents. Is he on medication? I generally do not advocate medicating kids, and prefer to look for other behavior management techniques, but some kids really do need meds. I assume he has he been evaluated by a psychiatrist if he has a diagnosis. How does he make it through school? What do his parents do at home. What is their reaction when he is destroying things in your home? His parents need to speak with a therapist about behavior management techniques that they can use to correct his behavior, and they need to be consistant in using them.

If his parents can't control their child any better than that, ADD or not, start having holidays at their house, or someone else's. My nephew had ADHD, but he also had parents and a sister who kept an eye on him.

This doesn't sound like ADD to me. It sounds like bad behavior and temper to me. My son has ADD. Has he been tested? I think his parents need to get a grip. ADD makes children have a hard time staying on task. Try searching the web for ADD

Make sure the parents give him his prescription for Methylphenidate before he is allowed to come into your house.

he probably has ADHD, H is for Hyperactive, there are medications that reduce Hyperactivity, and his parents probably give him some in the mornings, but keeping him sedated all day long is hazardous.
