Well Vista is appealing because it's a "new" Operating System. Or is it??? From the tech reports I've read it's really just a fancied up XP that really wasn't ready for release to the public.
There are still far too many issues and problems with Vista. Microsoft is planning their first Service Pack upgrade but I haven't seen a date for it yet.
I have a free copy of Vista Home Premium that is sitting in my drawer and it won't be installed any time soon due to all the issues there are between Vista and your other software and hardware.
Microsoft announced a few months ago that they would support XP until 2014. So there is no hurry to switch to Vista.
If you find XP works for you, I'd recommend that you don't install Vista, especially if you have an older PC. If you are buying a new PC and you have an option, I'd opt for XP.
Microsoft jumped the gun on this one just to release a new OS and realize an infulx of sales and money. Millions of people will buy it just to "keep up with the Jones" and be first on their block to be running Vista.
My recommendation is to give it at least a year!!!
Maybe Microsoft will work out most of the issues by then. Maybe all the hardware manufacturers will have released Vista compatible drivers, etc. by then.

Vista is newer so if you want to buy an operating system or a computer with a pre-installed operating system, Vista will be around for longer and will be supported longer than XP as XP is a few years old now. Security is *supposed* to be better in Vista, however XP is more compatible with older products and has less issues than Vista. However, XP was just the same when it came out and was brand new (maybe not as bad but it still had a lot of issues). The main issues people are having are problems with compatibility eg. getting a printer that is 3 years old to work on a new Vista computer. And if you are upgrading to Vista on an existing computer, you will probably have to upgrade hardware too and software and peripherals you already have might not be compatible, however there are downloadable software updates for a lot of older peripherals available online but not all. So I don't think Vista is all that bad, it is more that older products just aren't up to date and its the responsibility of the manufacturers (not Mircosoft) to make sure their products are compatible with popular operating systems and of course Vista is the replacement for XP, the current most popular operating system for home computers.

The latest version of XP with all latest service packs and patches is quite reliable and nice to use.
Go for Vista if you want newer graphics and more frills. Note that it requires more hardware stuff too.
If you like Vista graphics then there are some free tools that simulate the same in XP. So XP with a Vista interface.

Vista uses lots of CPU and RAM. So you will need a good amount of RAM. There are many bugs in Vista. Vista doesn't support many drivers and softwares.
I advice is to wait for a year to try Vista.
Or you can try if you have a good amount of RAM (about 2 GB).
Keep remembered, your RAM will work more with XP than Vista.

vista is the newest between the 2 but it really depends on your pc needs. I can still use 2000 for certain function that have been removed from the current xp or vista. So if your into this field you already know that you must know yourself better then anyone.

Xp is better in every way and runs faster on any given machine .. vista may eventually become better after a service pack or two .. but at the moment theres no comparison imo .. vista is just eye candy with bugs ...

My sister just got vista and hates it because everything she has in uncompatiable. All her stuff is XP. I myself decided to wait at least a year to let microsoft work out all the bugs before investing in vista.

I have been working for vista for 4 months,no issues in vista at all....vista is a fantastic operation system with an impressive looking, here is some new features in vista:
1-Restarting and shutdown is greatly faster than XP
2-Backup and restore has been improved effectively,u can restore your PC at any point you want like if you have Norton go back or deep freeze,so u don't have to be worry about the system failure.
3-security has been improved too, windows firewall is smarter, windows defender has been added for spywares and ads defense....you can define your self as the admin for the pc,and secure many files....you can encrypt and decrypt files and folders as you wish.
4-For multimedia you have tons of options, windows movie maker 2,windows media center edition has been added(for ultimate version only),windows photo gallery and windows dvd maker is also added and available for home edition too.
5-Windows live messenger 8.1 is included which is more better than old versions and include many features.
6-Internet explorer 7,and Microsoft Windows Mail which is much better than Outlook.
7-New games like chess and many others has been added.
8-For utilities, hard disk cleaning tool has been improved greatly...you can free up to 5GB with it in simple steps without need of any other utility, also the disk defragement is improved and much faster than any other previous version of windows
9-DirectX 10 is included wich is only available for vista and improve the game 3D.
10-great looking operation system, really never seen a friendly interface like this,3D wallpapers and much more.
The only disadvantage of vista that it take higher system resources than windows xp...but if u have 1GB of ram you are good.

You know, XP is better than Vista.
XP has only a simple structure and not using in MS-DOS mode, it also uses only 197 MB of Ram that's why 256 is already ok. It's fast.
Vista has some very many issues to work out, like application incompatibility and error in connection while your connected and some of 140 seconds boot and 400 MB use of Memory.
