A working knowledge of herbs is important for several reasons.

Connecting to nature through learning about plants, animals, etc.. gives you so much insight. There is much to be learned from our brothers and sisters here in all of the kingdoms.

Herbs are used for several purposes, medicinal and magical are two.

I like Scott Cunningham's Wicca books for beginners. As for the herbal, it depends on what information you want to gain.

If you want to go for identification, I'd recommend Peterson's field guide (for your area of the U.S.). I also like The Cherokee Herbal by J.T. Garrett (anything by J.T. Garrett and his son is good). I could go all day on this. Email me if you have any questions.

Btw, I loved Luci's answer.. she always shows the true enthusiasm of a witch :)

That's a good place to learn the magical qualities of herbs... but I don't recommend relying on his book for medical purposes. If you are looking to find an herb to help get rid of a cold or help with depression, etc... you want a book that is written by someone with a PhD. Cunningham does not have that type of working knowledge in herbs.

Scott Cunningham is an excellent resource for learning about herbalism as well as many other Pagan topics. Herbalism is just one of many tools that can be used to help reach a goal.

A hedge witch would be someone who practices a very earth-based and nature-oriented kind of witchcraft, usually with herbs. Your best bet would be to talk to your mother about what she believes and what she practices.

Herbs have healing properties that companies now use for medications.

Herbs brought about agriculture thus bringing civilization to our ancestor hunter-gatherer tribes.

Herbs can be used to ease pain, clean wounds, and reach an altered state of mind for meditation.

did you know aspirin originates from willow?

most modern medicines are based on traditional uses for what Gaia (our Earth) provides for us.

the importance is that the witches know their value and their properties, and therefore know how to use them in positive and effective ways

there are many books you would find useful, happy research!

Tradition. Understanding the earth means knowing how to use its bounty.

I'd recommend a good, SECULAR, herbal to start. John Lust's The Herb Book is a good one.
