A bush is a small plant. An ambush is a sneak attack, maybe after hiding behind a small plant.

1. A low woody perennial plant usually having several major stems
2. A large wilderness area
3. Dense vegetation consisting of stunted trees or bushes
4. Hair growing in the pubic area

Ambush
1. The act of concealing yourself and lying in wait to attack by surprise
2. Hunt (quarry) by stalking and ambushing

'Bush' is military slang for the field, or field duty i.e. off your post or base conducting operations. An 'ambush' is setting up in an area you know or are reasonably certain the enemy is going to pass by, and attacking them as they move into the area you're set up in.
