i agree. you're totally right.
the art should find you.
you shouldn't say oneday... "hey i like tattoos... i'm gonna go with the mainstream and get some ink... now what should i get and where?"
it should be the other way around. the art should find you. something that you cherish and then decide "hey. this means something to me. i want it to be a work of art forever on my body for me to love forever and to tell my story."

to me it says that the person asking is an attention seeking sheep and they would likely end up with a Nike swoosh or something like that left to their own devices.. I concur with you they should not get a tattoo. Asking what to get and if it hurts and all that just makes reading the Q's so very tedious. If there ever was a topic that needed a FAQ header it is this one. But I think that those types of people would never read the FAQ to answer that basic of questions because in their attention seeking self serving minds their questions and situation is soooo unique it has to be asked and replied to by everyone.
I am all for someone asking if anyone has seen some art for a particular design or image . I have seen some great stuff that I wouldn't have seen but that question is completely different from " What should I get for a tattoo?" My answer to that is they should get their own name since it is probably all about them anyway.

I agree with Somebody. I think its a yes and a no question. For the "Oh my god, I want a tattoo so bad before summer 'cause they're hot what can I get on my ankle that's sexy?" type questions, no, absolutely not. These are the people that you'll see right back on the forum asking about tattoo removal balm complaining that they just don't like the ink anymore. (after of course posting questions about aftercare and freaking out when the tattoo starts to peel.."The ink is falling out...help!). The people who are looking for conceptual assistance with a well thought out theme are, of course, a whole different story. These are people who are new to tattoos usually and while they have an idea of what they want they aren't familiar enough with the art form to develop and translate the idea into an image that would be applicable. I wish there were more questions like this and less of the teeny bopper crap.

Some people have trouble coming up with ideas or designs on their own, but they still want a tattoo. Some times they need some inspiration, but strangers on the internet are not always the best people to ask. I designed one of my tattoos too.

Well, yes and no. If people are going to ask "What should I put on my arm?" and they get a dragon based on the first person's suggestion, then I would call that irresponsible and rash.
However, someone could ask a more general question like, "What are your tattoos like and what are their meanings?" The collage of answers could inspire something meaningful and unique for the asker.

in a way. for the people who say " i want to get a tattoo, what should i get?" they really don't need a tattoo but there are people out there who genuinely want creative ideas who give in depth descriptions of something they want represented and feel that some of us could actually help with the creative part of that like "i have gone thru a tough couple of years and my family has struggled and now i am in a great place and i want a tattoo to help me remember the hard times, does anybody have any ideas that i could start with and build on?"
to me that is a great question and it deserves a great answer. there are a few people who ask stuff like that and i love answering those questions, and usually when i am answering creative tattoo questions for people i think of great tattoo ideas for myself because i am thinking outside the box.
so yes and no.

Why does a tattoo have to mean something? Why can't someone get a tattoo because they like the way tattoos look?
In my opinion it's better that the tattoo looks good without meaning something profound rather than getting something that means something and looks awful and noone except you can tell what it is.

Yeah youre dead right. But a lot of tattoos are of things like dragons which dont mean anything much to the person anyway. I dont get it. And when people get like chinese words or symbols I'm like you're not chinese! You've never been to China and don't speak the language! It baffles me. Some people have hideous tattoos.

I agree. I've got a very large tattoo and designed it with my tattoo artist. It means a lot to me. I would never dream of getting something that someone else thought was cool. Its not like a haircut or a new sweater....ha....its permanent. And its a form of expression, whether it be outward expression or just a way to support what you love----you cant get that inspiration from someone else's ideas.

I agree. I can't count the number of people who have butterfly tattoos, and does the butterfly truly mean something to them? Who knows, but probably not. Does that Chinese symbol meaning "love" really do it for you? Maybe. But I'm with you, if you don't know exactly what to get and where to put it you probably shouldn't get a tattoo.
